    Xbox Accessories has bricked my old controller on attempting to update


    Hi so, I have an old pre headphone jack controller which I had not used in a long time.

    I plugged it in to win10 and all worked fine, no problems. I decided to update the firmware.

    On using the Xbox Accessories app to update, i pressed a button to initiate the update, then windows had a little pop-up in the bottom right saying some update thing had been installed, the controller light went out, and after a while of nothing happening
    it told me to try plugging it back in.

    Now the controller will not light up, via USB or batteries it is dead.

    The Xbox Accessories app detect it but says "Update Required", so I press this, but then of course it expects me to press a button on the controller to continue with the update, but no button presses are being detected, so it will not continue with the update.

    So, first the app has destroyed my controller, but also the design of the update process is flawed, in requiring me to press a button on the controller to continue with the update process, it is preventing me from unbricking it.

    Please advise, and please Microsoft, add a clickable "Next" button to the process.

    Xbox elite 2 controller bricked after update

    I was having the same exact problem. Xbox Accessories it told me that I needed to update. When I clicked update, the process failed, and the controller no longer functioned.

    Your suggestion to use the Xbox Accessories seems a bit silly as it was using that app that bricked the controller in the first place.

    I actually did manage to fix it though! Hopefully this helps people:

    The problem seemed to be what USB port I was using. I have a USB hub, and with the controller connected to the hub, Xbox Accessories detected the controller, but attempting to do a firmware update bricked it.

    I disabled bluetooth on the PC, unplugged the USB cord from the controller, turned the controller off

    Then I plugged the USB (A) into a port directly on the back of my PC.

    I plugged the USB (C) side into the controller, which turned it on.

    (controller still bricked at this point)

    I then opened Xbox Accessories app and did a firmware update.

    This time the progress bar started moving, and the update was a success.

    The controller is now working as intended.

    Xbox Accessories on PC bricked my Xbox One controller and I don't have a access to a Xbox One console

    I just had exactly the same issue

    I finally installed Windows 10 and knew that this was a prerequisite for updating the xbox one controller firmware. Installed the "xbox Accessories" app and attempted to update the firmware.

    The update stalled at 0% and waited 10 minutes and hit the back arrow. The xbox accessories app no longer sees my controller...... seems that the app bricked it.

    Like the original poster I do not own an xbox one console

    Any solutions to this problem?

    Another victim here. Received my brand new Elite controller today, bricked after the update from xbox accessories app.

    It may have been windows 10 anniversary update drivers that caused issue. Anyone here is facing the same brick issue without the anniversary update on their windows 10?

    Hey there SwitchinXbox!

    Is this happening with just this controller or have you experienced this with multiple controllers? I would advise attempting to update your controller to see if maybe it's missing an update that is causing this.

    Give it a try and let us know if it has helped.
