Xbox 360 updatedownload, constant fails

Often in the older 360 consoles with the built in memory unit, this issue will occur.

When the memory unit fails, the Xbox sees that there's an update available since it can't see the update that was on the storage device. When the Xbox tries to download/install the update, the update can't install because of the failed storage device.

Does your Xbox 360 have the memory unit and/or the hard drive?

Sorry for all the hassle, I do want to thank you for keeping us up to date with the process. As it states in our article

'Error D000-0185 occurs when you try to download an update'.
If the previous solution (provided by XBF Amber) didn't resolve the problem, you would need to repair or replace the Xbox.

I have an xbox360 we have not used for a while. When I start it up it says an update is available from xbox live. The download fails and fails and fails. It also says I cannot connect to xbox live until I get the update, which I cannot get. The system is
basically useless. I have reset to defaults, tested connections, network statistics are soli, router connection is fine...just cannot do an update or connect to xbox live. Microsoft “support” was a nightmare to get to a human, and then got a useless cookie
cutter link by way of an answer. There doesn’t seem to be any way to see if the console is using correct information to connect to xbox live (user, password, etc. Any Ideas before I throw this thing out?

Have you tried clearing the MAC address on the console to see if that refreshes things. How long is your Xbox Live gold subscription active for ?
