  1. Xbox 360 end of life support - marketplace concerns and fixing the date limit.

    Hi,

Xbox Support on X (Twitter) told me I should post here. I have a couple of other concerns regarding the Xbox 360 that have come to light with the server problems over the last couple of days.

First being the marketplace shutdown - it's a real shame because their are an array of exclusive games that have not been ported to anything else that will no longer be legally available. Plus DLC for many games being unavailable for future players who want to experience the Xbox 360 (Such as for nostalgic purposes or to share with others in the future, akin to how parents/grandparents of today may show their children/grandchildren their favourite game from an older generation of consoles)

Will there be an effort to preserve those games/DLC? A solution for 360 gamers to switch over there current games, content and saves to a new platform (Either PC/Windows or a more modern Xbox being the most likely candidates) without relying on backward compatibility (which was also affected today) would be fantastic.

The other is the 2025 date limit on Xbox 360. At the moment it can only be set until 2025. This is a problem with some games like GTA 5, which lock you out of your save data if the console date is not after the last save point. The weird thing is that if you set the date to 2025, it will happily tick over into 2026, so it only seems to be a UI limit but not a hardware limit (i.e. no chance of Y2K style problems) Would it be possible to have the Xbox 360 updated one last time to remove the UI limit on setting the date?

I didn't think it would be problem because if you go online the date is automatically set via the servers, so in theory once we're past 2025, getting the right date in to the console wouldn't be an issue. However, today's happenings with server failures and the scheduled marketplace closure its a worrying problem for the future of the console. Given the possibility of servers going down again (and possibly permanently) I'd hate to be locked out of game saves just because I can't set the date!

    Thanks

I will continue insisting for the Games for Windows Marketplace to be repaired by Microsoft

With digital content you purchase a license to use that item and it is not available to the end of time. Everything has an EOS and EOL date (end of support/ end of life) where it is no longer supported and no longer available.

To the end of time or until an official announcement of end of service/life with a clear date is made. Microsoft
never announced they would ever cut people off from their purchases made for the Games for Windows Marketplace. Feel free to prove me wrong with an official announcement. I know very well what
I am talking about, which is why I know I am in my full right to keep insisting. Why do you think they fixed this same problem when it first appeared in 2015/2016 and then kept fixing when it kept popping back all throughout 2017? Out of the kindness of their
heart? No, because they had and still have an obligation. Why did they stop repairing it in 2018? Maybe because they thought they could just sneakily get away with it and the public outcry would be small enough to ignore. Maybe it is, but I am not stopping,
because I know I am in the right.

It looks like it's just me whining and complaining, but I can absolutely assure you so many people around the world would be so happy to regain access to their purchases from this Marketplace at least one last time. Plenty of other people have been complaining
since 2018 if you look around and after so much they just got sick of it, got mad at Microsoft and accepted the loss. I will not go down like that.

Purchase records from the Games for Windows Marketplace are still kept at Microsoft; that is a fact. Why do you think they are still keeping those and not purging them already if they're never meant to be accessed again? This is strictly a matter of repairing
the back-end services used by the Games for Windows Marketplace to allow us to access our purchases, which I bet is not even all that hard. Microsoft is no stranger to this problem. It happened several times in the past and was fixed (even if sometimes it
    took months).

I'll make an easy analogy. How would people like it if one day soon they would suddenly lose access to all of their Xbox 360 purchases and nothing whatsoever could be downloaded anymore from the 360 Marketplace. 360 Marketplace is even older (2005) than
the Games for Windows Marketplace (2007). And Microsoft would just shrug their shoulders and say... 'Well, the platform is really old now. You don't need those purchases anymore. You can go play on Xbox One now.' How would that go with the community?

I'm sure they released a similar Painkiller game towards the end of the original Xboxs life. In very limited quantities iirc.

I trying get my Xbox 360 set up

    Hi Cathy,

What Xbox 360 model do you have, and do you receive any specific error codes/messages when trying to complete the setup?

    If it’s an Xbox 360 E:

Set up your Xbox 360 E console | Xbox Support

If it’s the original or S model:

Set up your original Xbox 360 or Xbox 360 S console | Xbox Support

Keep in mind that most games and apps are now limited on Xbox 360 due to the obsolete software and discontinued support and security updates. Apps like Netflix and YouTube aren’t accessible, and a lot of online servers (multiplayer/matchmaking) for games have been shut down by the developers.

Also note that the Xbox 360 Store and Marketplace will be officially retired from the end of July:
