Xbox 360 controller not pairing with wireless adaptor for Windows 10.

Hi,

Apologies for the (partial) rant, but I'm more than a little frustrated that the only way to get support for genuine Microsoft products purchased directly from them, is to seek out help on the forums! :/

I have an old Xbox 360 wireless receiver for windows, and a 360 controller that up until a Windows update towards the end of last year worked fine. Now my PC won't even acknowledge its insertion into a USB port - no green led, no chime from Windows, no 'unknown device' in DM, nothing.

So I purchased a new Wireless adaptor for Windows 10, which installed drivers correctly, shows in DM, and pairs with my son's XB1 controller perfectly well. The 360 controller also pairs with an old 360 console perfectly well. I cannot get the 360 controller to pair with my PC using this adaptor. I have a horrible suspicion, that after bricking my old dongle with an update, 360/XB1 wireless controllers are not compatible, despite the accessory box stating its "for use with Xbox controllers".

I've already spent £20 on a new adaptor, I sincerely hope I won't need to spend another £50 on a a controller.......

Am I doing something wrong here?

About your problem, I ask you to try the solution below on your computer.

Connect your adapter to one of your computer's USB ports and then look for device manager on your PC, then look for the term other devices the adapter will be recognized as an unknown driver, click on it and then tap on update driver.

the new adapter is designed for the xbox one controllers and series controller, the old 360 controller used different wireless protocols and tech and is not compatible with the hardware.

if your old 360 wireless adapter is not showing at all when plugged in then it could be dead, in that case there is not much that can be done as the 360 and its peripherals are no longer made/supported or repaired including the adapter.

And when windows gets updated more and more some things stop working due to incompatabilities and as the hardware is no longer support officially then i think nothing will be done officially.

I know others have had some success using the tutorials on youtube to rewrite the driver slightly but not sure even if that still works with the latest version of windows.

Unfortunately I'm not prepared to install unsigned drivers in order to get genuine products to work! The old adaptor is not a Chinese copy, and was also bought directly from Microsoft......

My main issue now is why will the new adaptor not work with the 360 controller. I'm in the UK and can return it without penalty but I'm unable to find a way to actually contact Microsoft and start the process, not even through the store history!

Can anyone just please point me in the right direction so I can contact Microsoft and exercise my statutory rights!?

Thank you for the reply, but you appear to have overlooked some points in my explanation - The old adaptor does not appear in device manager at all, and I have no unknown devices. The new one does and works perfectly well with other controllers', just not the 360.
