Xbox 360 controller no longer pairs to wireless receiver for windows 10

i've been using this successfully for over a year.

i havn't used it for the last month or so, and when i recently tried to use it. none of my controllers would pair with it.

I've encountered this once in awhile before, reinstalling the driver always seemed to fix it, but this time nothing i try seems to work.

for clarification, the wireless receiver, lights up, and connects to the computer when plugged in, but when trying to pair with a controller, they are not successful.

the controller has a maximum time to sync of about 20 seconds, the wireless receiver also tries to sync for 20 seconds (this was tested individually, to find the maximum time they are in pairing mode)

when trying to pair them, they do not reach the full time, it seems they "find" each other, but do not successfully sync.

the controller searches for the receiver for about 2-3 seconds (spinning ring) then flashes 3 or 4 times quickly (full ring), then goes back to its standby, a slower flashing, full ring.

this has been tried with multiple xbox 360 controllers, that have all worked previously.

I assume a recent windows update may have broke this? but thats just a guess.

Sorry to hear it. Unfortunately Xbox does not support 3rd party products so we have no specific support for this device. You may need to contact the manufacturer for more help.

In the meantime though please make sure the PC and the device drivers have no pending updates that could be preventing it from connecting

I'm having the same problem. My wireless controller was working with my receiver yesterday, and today after installing the Windows 10 update, it no longer works. It's highly unlikely that this problem coinciding with what looks like a major Windows update
is coincidental. Either this is a bug, or Microsoft no longer supports (i.e. disabled) 360 controllers with Windows 10 and wants us to buy Xbox One controllers.

I'm hoping it's a bug.

The connect button starts the pairing process with a Xbox 360 console or the Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows.

The Xbox 360 controller uses a proprietary wireless protocol, and NOT Bluetooth. So the standard wireless devices in your computer can't work with the Xbox 360 wireless controller.

You absolutely definitely need the Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows if you wish to use your Xbox 360 controller on your PC.

Make sure you do NOT get the Wireless Gaming Receiver for Xbox One controllers, as they won't work with Xbox 360 controllers.

Also if you try to use a Play & Charge USB cable on your Xbox 360 controller, this will also not work, as the Play & Charge cable ONLY carries power, but does NOT transmit controller data.

So if you don't want to buy a wireless receiver, your only options are to buy a dedicated wired Xbox 360 controller (that has a non-removable USB cord attached), or get a Xbox One controller with Bluetooth functionality.
