Xbox 360 capture card issues

Alright, so i recently bought myself an xbox 360 elite. When i bought it i made sure to specifically ask the clerk for VGA cables, so that way i could display it to my TV while leaving the HDMI port open for me to plug in my capture card. Only problem is, someone at Microsoft had the revolutionary idea to make it physically impossible to plug in both VGA and HDMI simultaneously. I'm a pretty creative guy but as of right now im stumped, is there any unconventional method i can use to make this console work the way it SHOULD?

So basically, i can only record gameplay without being able to see it? Or is there some simple solution im not seeing?

the reason its designed to cover the hdmi slot when plugging in the standard tv cable is it can't output to both, if i remember i think the standard slot if using component cables outputs 1080i and standard def with the normal cable, 1080p via hdmi.

if its an external capture device i thought you have the input and the capture has an output back to the tv.

which capture device is it.
