I can't refund it? and I have to pay for another 12 month card even though I only got 4 months of a subscription I didn't want?

The only way to possible refund a prepaid card is by taking it back to the retailer you purchased it from, but since it's been redeemed they wouldn't refund it. When you redeem the code it warns you how much time will be added and that it cannot be reverted once you complete the transaction. Since you completed the redemption, you agreed to those terms.

1.Go to the Services & Subscriptions (https://account.microsoft.com/services) page for your account.

2. Select Manage next to the subscription you want to cancel.

3. Under Payment Settings, select Cancel.

4. If you qualify for a refund, you must choose between not charging my subscription again or ending now and getting a refund. If you qualify for a refund, then you'll only see the option not to charge my subscription again.

But, unfortunately, the £1 offer is only for new subscribers, meaning, if you at some point have a gamepass subscription activated on your account, you're no longer eligible for this offer. :/

You would have to use it on another account if you have one.

Unfortunately since you completed the redemption, there is no way to go back In order to get the full 12 months, your Ultimate subscription has to completely end before you add new 12 month code.
