Would someone please assist me with fixing an echo/feedback from my sons Xbox one controller?

Hi, I recently got my son a “Next Gen” xbox one wireless controller and I’ve noticed that there is bad audio feedback whenever he uses the mic. He can hear his own voice and I can hear my own echo when speaking to him as if he is gaming with a loudspeaker (which he isn’t).

I’ve tested the controller on my laptop and used the headset (connected to the controller with a wire) to conduct a zoom meeting and there wasn’t any echoing so I’m assuming that the controller itself isn’t faulty and that the problem lies with the Xbox One Console itself.

I’ve gone into the xbox audio settings and changed the party chat settings to “headset” and I’ve also turned down the headset volume and reduced other sounds by 50% in the console's audio settings, but I have been unable to fix the issue.

I have also connected the controller and headset to Fortnite on my laptop and there isnt any echo which reinforces my feelings that it is console related.

I would greatly appreciate any help you kind souls can offer.

Additional information below:

Console: xbox one

Controller: xbox one “next gen” controller connected to a wired headset (its worth noting that the problem persists even when switching between multiple headsets so I dont thing the headset itself is faulty)

Game used where echo experienced: fortnite

May we know what is the description of Xbox Console after adding it to the account? Does it say: Xbox One or Xbox One X or Xbox One S?

Thanks for uploading a picture of your Xbox Controller. For now, we would suggest you to update the Xbox Console and Xbox Controller. You will need to update the controller on PC and Xbox Console. For the steps on how to update, please check:

Update Xbox Console - About system updates on Xbox | Xbox Support

Make sure that your console is connected to the internet, and then press the Xbox button to open the guide.
Select Profile & system> Settings > System > Updates.
Under Updates, you’ll see:
- Console update available. Select this to begin your update, or
- No console update available. This means your console is up to date.

Update the Xbox Controller -

Please see the detailed steps on how to update the Xbox Controller for Wireless, USB and to PC.
In PC, you may install Xbox Accessories app from Microsoft Store to get started: Xbox Accessories - Microsoft Store Apps

Thanks for the reply.

We have consulted this to our Internal Support Team and they would like to know if this could be a compatibility issue or else we may try to troubleshoot this. They have suggested for you to try resetting the console while keeping the games and apps.

Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
Select Profile & system > Settings > System > Console info.
Select Reset console.
On the Reset your console, please select Reset and keep my games & apps.

Then, try to use the controller by connecting it with wire on the Xbox Console. Plug in your headset on the controller and test if issue persist.

Next, try to connect your controller to Xbox Console, wirelessly then plug in your headset on the controller and test if issue persist.

We will wait for your update.

Thanks so much for your response, I really appreciate it!

It appears that I could not register the device on my Gaming Parent_909 account so I've gone ahead and registered in to this account, I hope this is ok.

After reading the Wireless Controller guide linked to your initial response I believe that the controller is Bluetooth capable given that that the plastic around the Xbox button is part of the faceplate of the controller. I have however provided a picture of the controller in hopes that it will be useful.

The headset primarily used is the Sparkfox XBOX One SF1 Stereo Headset (product link Sparkfox XBOX One SF1 Stereo Headset Black and Green - Incredible Connection) . I used a differed headset (a generic Panasonic wired headset) to test to see if echoing was perhaps headset related but the Panasonic headset also caused an echo when using the controller connected with the Xbox. (There however is no echo present when using the xbox controller to play fortnite on my laptop while using both the Sparkfox and Panasonic headsets).

Your description has already said more of the isolation you have already performed, and we appreciate that you have shared it with us. We notice that you mentioned Xbox One Controller to be the next gen.

May we confirm if this is a wireless one? Like this one: Configure an Xbox Wireless Controller | Xbox Support

Also, do you mind checking this support article: Set up Bluetooth on your Xbox Wireless Controller | Xbox Support? This will help us identify whether the type of your controller you have is a Bluetooth-supported controller or not. So, we can isolate your issue by connecting your controller through Bluetooth or we just have to stick with wired.
