OK, the new router is a Actiontec GT704-WGB. I have received the following error message:

Your network doesn't have sufficient MTU setting. Xbox live requires a minimum MTU setting of 1364.

    >>>THE MTU SETTING ON MY ROUTER IS 1500<<<

I have recieved other error messages before adjusting the MTU, but this seems to be the only one I am getting now.

Would the fact that I have the older first gen Xbox 360 Elite and use one of the older single antenna wireless adapters have anything to do with it. I read somewhere that the older wireless adapter is using wireless mode 802.11a and that it might not work
on newer gateways. Is that true? It works at my daughters house, my sons house and by stealing...er...borrowing my neighbors signal. I agree, I think my Verizon is trying to "diddle" me.

Thank you for contacting us! I'm Anderson, an Independent Consultant and a Microsoft user like you.

    good afternoon

    is your xbox locked?

    already tried these options?

Solution 1: Reset the networking hardware

Turn off your Xbox 360 console and network hardware (for example, your modem and router).

    Wait 30 seconds.

Turn on the modem and wait for it to come back online (one minute).

Turn on the next hardware (eg a router) and wait another minute.

Repeat step 4 for each additional networking hardware.

Turn on the console, go to My Xbox and select System Settings.

    Select Network Settings.

Select WiredNet or the name of the wireless network if prompted to do so.

    Select Test Xbox LIVE Connection.

If you get the same MTU error, try the next solution.

Solution 2 (wireless only): Improve wireless signal

If you're connecting to Xbox LIVE using a wireless connection, the MTU error might be due to a weak wireless signal.

Check if the wireless signal strength needs to increase. See how:

On the Xbox 360 console, go to My Xbox and select System Settings.

    Select Network Settings.

Select WiredNet or the name of the wireless network if prompted to do so.

    Select Test Xbox LIVE Connection.

If the signal strength is one or two bars, try increasing it.

Wireless signal strength in one or two bars

Follow these tips to increase wireless signal strength:

Remove the router or gateway from the floor and walls and metal objects (such as metal file cabinets).

Minimize obstructions in the straight path between your Xbox 360 console and your wireless router or gateway.

Reduce the distance between the console and the wireless router or gateway. Ideally, networking hardware is located near the center of your home.

Change the position of the antenna on the Xbox 360 Wireless Networking Adapter (external adapter only).

Turn off wireless devices. If the router uses the 2.4 gigahertz (GHz) band, try turning off wireless devices such as 2.4GHz cordless phones and Bluetooth devices.

Try changing the wireless channel. Wireless routers and gateways can broadcast on different channels, and one channel may be clearer than another. See your hardware documentation for help changing wireless channels.

Add a wireless repeater to extend your wireless network range. You can increase signal strength by placing a wireless repeater midway between the router and the console.

Switch wireless signal bands. If you have a dual-band router and an external wireless adapter, try switching the router to a wireless protocol that transmits in the 5GHz band (wireless A or N protocol). See your hardware documentation for help changing the wireless protocol.

Add an Xbox 360 Wireless N Networking Adapter (Xbox 360 S console). If the wireless router is not near the console, an Xbox 360 Wireless N Networking Adapter may improve signal strength. When you connect a wireless network adapter to an Xbox 360 S console, the console will automatically use the wireless adapter instead of the built-in Wi-Fi. To learn how to connect an Xbox 360 Wireless Networking Adapter, see the following article:

907330 How to Connect an Xbox 360 Wireless Networking Adapter

If you get the same MTU error, try the next solution.

    Solution 3: Simplify Setup

The router or gateway may be having difficulty sharing an Internet connection. To find out if this is true, try simplifying the configuration.

    Do one of the following:

If you have a wired connection: Temporarily disconnect everything but the modem cable and Xbox 360 console cable from the router.

If you have a wireless connection: Temporarily turn off everything connected to the wireless network except your Xbox 360 console.

    Test your Xbox LIVE connection:

On the console, go to My Xbox and select System Settings.

    Select Network Settings.

Select WiredNet or the name of the wireless network (if prompted to do so).

    Select Test Xbox LIVE Connection.

If you don't get an MTU error message after simplifying the configuration, the router might be having difficulty managing multiple connections. To try to solve the problem, try the next solution.

Solution 4: Check the MTU setting

Xbox LIVE requires a minimum MTU setting of 1364. Make sure your router or gateway has an MTU setting of 1364 or higher. To do this, log into the router or gateway and check the MTU setting. See the documentation provided with your router or gateway for information on how to make this change.

If you change the MTU setting on your networking hardware, reset it and retest your Xbox LIVE connection.

If the MTU setting on your router or gateway is 1364 or higher, try the next solution.

    Solution 5: Open network ports

The Xbox 360 console uses network ports to communicate with Xbox LIVE servers. if you are

    Intermittent Disconnects

I can relate to this problem the best answer would be to use a wired connection. The xbox wireless adapter is not that good. as for your port forwarding are you positive it is set correctly.

    MTU error!

I have a couple questions/suggestions as the MTU in this case is not related to the actual MTU setting but fragmentation due to wireless interference.

First, do you have any other wireless devices you use with the Xbox 360? Things like the Turtle Beach X31 headset will cause MTU thanks to the transmitter being too close to the console. You can solve this by moving the transmitter away.

Also, are you on Wireless N for your network? If so, try switching to Wireless G. G runs in 2.4Ghz and is a lot more stable then N which runs in 5Ghz.

The WRT160N should not inherently cause MTU nor should there be an issue with the signal coming from it, so it's most likely due to a bad setting. Since it's a Linksys it does have the option for WPS or WiFi Protected Setup. Make sure that WPS is DISABLED
    as it will cause problems.

To do this, log into the router and click on Wireless.

It should bring you to the default page which will offer Manual or WiFi Protected Setup and you want to make sure you have it all manually configured.

Go with Mixed mode, Channel 1 OR 11, SSID set to broadcast, and lastly keep the SSID the same (Network name).

Got new wireless adapter, and now getting MTU error

Hey Akya, sorry to hear about the connection issues! So it sounds like you replaced your wireless adapter on the console, but this one is producing an MTU error, which the MTU thread didn't resolve. If this is the case, I'm curious--did you purchase the
same model adapter, or a different one? Have you since tried simply resetting your network hardware in your home, to see if that helps with the connection issue?
