Windows Sonic Surround vs Dolby Atmos vs Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound for Xbox One

For those who like something better than just compressed Stereo audio for gaming, music and watching YouTube/Neflix videos, what is your preference?

I think Windows Sonic Surround is rubbish. There's lots of reports on google, the biggest search engine, that indicate it is. Turtle Beach 700 has this feature. And I find that 7.1 Surround Sound is more richer with presets options which Turtle Beach has.

I'm possibly looking for a new headset, as my Turtle Beach 500X has cracked hinges due to cheap plastic used. It's an issue with their headsets, but they're the biggest brand available in NZ/Australia. The defect is covered in your NZ/Australian consumer
legislative rights, and Turtle Beach will refund or replace you with a new headset, so long as it's under it's normal is it 12 month warranty. But the warranty for this headset has expired. The retailer I got it from mightyape, gave me a replacement mid last
year while it was on warranty, but same thing has occurred again.

I like wireless and Dolby to enjoy the sound richness of Dolby 7.1. Windows Sonic is just a slish slosh of mixed untidy audio codecs which emulate Dolby 7.0, so it's nowhere near the quality of 7.1. I'm looking to get the Turtle Beach 800x since it's wireless
and dolby 7.1. Turtle Beach's NZ/Australian suppliers emailed me saying they don't sell directly to the public, but that Mightyape AU/NZ should be receiving some new stock soon. I've used duct tape and black cloth tape to hold together my 500x. I don't think
I'll try Astros as they're far too expensive and they have lots of complaints from mightyape customer reviews that they're overpriced and faulty. Turtle Beach offers a 2 year warranty on the 800x. The duct tape and cloth tape on my 500x is a little struggling
to hold it while wearing it.

I won't go with any other brand. They're either not fully compatible, or the sound isn't as good as turtle beach, not wireless or not as good 7.1 surround sound as turtle beach.

And plus there's more compatibility for Dolby 7.1 surround than Windows Sonic and just offers a much more pure audio experience than Windows Sonic. Xbox Support mentioned to me Xbox 360 is Dolby 7.1 surround compatible. Since Windows Sonic is a Microsoft
product thingy, it's not perfect, even after all these updates. I just prefer Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound. Better audio quality rather than trying to emulate surround sound with poor say, audio quality textures in bass and trebo and alto clef ranges.

    :)

Can't Hear Game Audio or menu sounds through headset

Is your console enrolled in the Insider Preview Program?

When you go to the settings under Display&Sound, do you have the console set up to also play game sound through the headphones? If so, do you use any spatial surround modes like Windows Sonic or Dolby Atmos for headphones?

If you set it to Dolby Atmos for Headphones, did you actually purchase Dolby Atmos for headphones? If not, you could only try Dolby Atmos for headphones for two weeks. So check the settings if the headphones work with Stereo or Windows Sonic.

Xbox Windows Sonic/Dolby Atmos for Headphones to Receiver via HDMI

When either Windows Sonic or Dolby Atmos for Headphones is selected and headphone audio is output via HDMI or optical (i.e. box is checked in settings
menu), my receiver still shows that it is receiving the same HDMI audio type before the virtual surround headphone processing was selected.

For example, if HDMI audio is set to 5.1 uncompressed and I select Windows Sonic or Dolby Atmos for Headphones, the HDMI and optical audio selections are grayed out as Headphone format but my receiver still shows
5.1 PCM as the input audio signal.

If I back out of Windows Sonic or Dolby Atmos for Headphones and change the HDMI audio out, when I activate Windows Sonic or Dolby Atmos for Headphones again my receiver reports whatever
the HDMI audio selection is as the audio input signal. For example, if HDMI audio is set to Bitstream (Dolby Digital), my receiver reports Dolby Digital 5.1 as the audio input signal. If HDMI audio is set to 7.1 Uncompressed, my receiver reports 7.1 PCM as
the audio input signal. If HDMI audio is set to Stereo Uncompressed, my receiver reports 2.0 PCM as the audio input signal.

I was assuming that the Headphone audio format would be a 2 channel PCM signal with virtual surround processing encoded in the two channels, and therefore the audio sent to my receiver
would always be 2 channel PCM.

What are the correct settings for outputting the virtual surround modes for Headset audio over HDMI?

    Surround Sound Headset

I like the Turtle Beach Stealth 700. It uses Windows Sonic for surround sound, and is Dolby Atmos compatible.

The Stealth 800X is 7.1 surround, and can be found on sale for around $180

Most of the rest of the Xbox Surround Sound Headsets run above the $200 mark.

Windows Sonic / Dolby Atmos for headphones: proper in-game settings

    So....

Since nobody has given an answer yet (the link for xbox troubleshooting doesnt even mention in-game settings), let me try to explain whats happening. Windows Sonic as well as Dolby Atmos for Headphones downmix a surround signal to stereo in a way that makes
it seem as if you're listening to surround sound. If you set your Game audio to Headphones the Game will not output 7.1 Surround sound but either pure Stereo or already have done the work that sonic is supposed to do. So, if your game has built in surround
sound (or binaural sound) for headphones turn off sonic and use that or use the speaker settings and turn on sonic. Dont turn on both or sonic will try to make a surround sound out of a binaural stereo signal. Trust me, that's not a good listening experience.

DTS and L:CPM encodede movie discs on Xbox One's Dolby Atmos Headphone app

My main quesition is of inputs ad outputs> Trutle beach headphones in the 360 era took Dolby 5.1 inputs and made then Dolby Headphone Output, and was an external device that also wokred in TVs and mobvies players... aslonga as the source was Dlby sound
in. DTS didn't get coded at all, and LPCM beyond 2.0 wouldn't fit in a Toslinlk.

The Turtle Beach DTS:X headphones had DTS 2-track headpone surround outputs, but onl\y accepted Dolby-based inputs, so I can't decode Blu Rays in DTS and expec a surround sound.

It seems to me that Dolby Atmos inputs like Blu Rays sound better in dolby Atmos Headphones than DT5 5.1-DTS 7.1, L:pVM 5.1-7.1, and even "lesser dolby modes" 5.1-7.1

Is the Dolby Atmod Headepho0ne app suposed to take ANY of the 3flkavors and tuen them into Dolby Headphone? Or does it only work wiht Dolby Atmos movies? meaing you haver swithc the settings on every non-Atmos disc.

Finally is thee such a ting as a 2-channel headphone surround encoder that takes ANY of the brands and flavords of sound formats and send out 2-yttrack, surround heapdhone f some sort of format. I'd like that for the upstairs TV. Too many DTS movies sound
lackluster and 70% f our BD/3D colection is DTS.

I knw Sony heaadhones have a Doly and DTS input and sound better than pure uncoded 2-track LPCM, but it doesn;t sound as good as Xbox's DTS-> dDolby conversions and then letting the Turetle Beach encode it in 2-Track surrouud headphone. (By the way, does Xbox
    One do LPCM 7.1-> Dolby 7.1 ?)

There is surround sound for Xbox One games there is just no Dolby surround at the moment.

Currently you have uncompressed 5.1 & 7.1 and DTS.
