Will you lose your gamertag if you do not purchase Xbox Live Gold?

no you will not lose your gamertag.

Accounts will be deleted after 5 years if they are inactive. So you just have to log in occasionally.

Ok, to optimize the use of your Gold and games on both consoles you should consider the following set up.

1. Move the console that is in your Den to the Living Room and add the other gamertags to your Family from the Settings Menu.

2. Take the console from the Living Room and put it in your Den for your use. Do not set this console as your Home console or the family members will lose access to Gold.

This works best if you purchase games and content digitally on your account. This way if you purchase a game on the console in the Den it will automatically download to your Home console in the Living Room.

If you choose to keep your Home console in the Den then you would need to purchase another Gold membership for the tag that is set as Home on the console in the Living Room.

Its a license that is tied to your gamertag. Also remember if you let your LIVE lapse at all you’ll lose the Xbox One Games with Gold that you have aquired free.

It is against the ToU and CoC of the Live service to allow others access to your gamertag. This is more for your protection as you never know when someone may do something that makes you lose access to that gamertag.

However, if you create a gamertag for your son on the Xbox One and add it to your Family then he will share your Gold membership on the Xbox One console and be able to earn his own gamerscore.

When you are banned from live you lose everything associated with your gamertag (MS Points/Gold/DLC). These items cannot be transferred. This is part of the punishment for doing something against the ToU.
