Hdmi 2.0 ports are fully capable of supporting this framerate, but neither the Series X nor S supports this on a 1440p 120 hz monitor that has an Hdmi 2.0 port. The settings says that the monitor does not support this framerate at this resolution. I have tried three or four different dongles to use the Display port on my monitor instead, none of them worked.

    Hello TripStar01,

Thank you for sharing this with us and welcome to Xbox Forums.

Based on the information you provided, it appears that you are having issues with running 1440p @120hz through HDMI 2.0 ports on your Xbox Series X|S.

To answer your question, Microsoft is always working on improving the user experience and adding new features to their products. As of now, it seems that the Xbox Series X and S do not support 1440p @ 120Hz through HDMI 2.0 ports. This is because the Xbox Series X and S automatically read your 1440p monitor as 60Hz.

However, you can try the following to modify your settings and select the resolution you would like. Here's how to do it:

    • From home, navigate to Settings.
    • Then go to General > TV & Displays options.
    • You'll see a menu that shows Display, Setup and Advanced.
    • Navigate to Advanced > video fidelity & overscan > overrides.
    • In overrides, select HDMI and "use manual settings".

Please note that while this will allow you to select whatever resolution you would like, your monitor may output at a lower resolution than normal.

As for future updates from Xbox developers to support 1440p @120Hz through HDMI 2.0 ports, I couldn't find any official announcements or plans. It might be best to keep an eye on official Xbox news.

Regarding your issue with using DisplayPort on your monitor, it's possible that the dongles you have tried are not compatible with your monitor or Xbox. I recommend checking the specifications of your monitor and the dongles to ensure they support the required resolution and refresh rate. You can also try using a different HDMI cable to connect your Xbox to your monitor.

In addition, you can try the following steps to troubleshoot the issue:

    1. Make sure your Xbox is updated to the latest software version. To check for updates, go to Settings > System > Updates & downloads.

    2. Check the display settings on your Xbox. Go to Settings > General > TV & display options > Video modes. Make sure the resolution and refresh rate are set to 1440p @120hz.

    3. Check the display settings on your monitor. Make sure the HDMI port you are using supports 1440p @120hz and that the monitor is set to the correct input.

    4. Try resetting your Xbox display settings. To do this, press and hold the Xbox button on your controller, then select Restart console > Reset display settings.

If the issue persists, let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

Will the xbox devs ever send an update to be able to run 1440p @120hz through hdmi 2.0 ports ?

Xbox Series X and S does work with 120Hz and 1440P on HDMI 2.0 displays. The issue isn't one of refresh rates, it's about timings, and a compatible monitor.

Not all displays are equal, at least not when it comes to be connected to Xbox Series X|S consoles. One monitor with HDMI 2.0 might be able to do it, and another can't. The reason why one can and the other can't is down to the aforementioned timings.

The one that can has a refresh rate timing of exactly 120Hz, while the other that can't either has a custom timing of say 119.88Hz or simply doesn't support refresh rates over 60Hz over HDMI. Connecting a game console to PC monitor is a recent phenomenon. Most older Monitors were not designed to run high refresh rates over HDMI, that's why they have a Display port. Many older monitors were designed to run best over DP. HDMI was an afterthought.

If the issue is one of timings, connecting your console via an adaptor to the Display port won't necessarily work either. PC graphics cards don't have to conform to strict timings like the Xbox. Hence why a monitor might well work at 120Hz connected to a PC, but not when connected to a console.

Xbox One X Not Sending 1440p 120hz Signal

Wow yes your correct. Got my ports mixed up.

On PC I did test the HDMI 2.0 port, and im able to get 120hz and 144hz at 1440p.

The Xbox on the other hand will only allow me to choose 120hz at 1080p. When I choose 1440p it only allows 60hz.

Thanks for informing me on the HDMI 2.0 port.

    1440p @ 120hz On Xbox One X compatibility?

    Starseid,

    Thank you for your reply.

I would like to clarify my question a little...

I am aware that the HDMI 2.0 platform is capable of 1440p/120hz

However from what I'm reading online, users are not able to get this to work with their xbox one x, despite the monitor being capable of 1440p/120hz via HDMI 2.0

So the question isn't will any HDMI 2.0 port work, the question is will any MONITOR with HDMI 2.0 and 120hz refresh rate work?

From what I'm reading the answer appears to be no... so the question is... which ones will?

Thank you again for your answer Starseid, much appreciated.
