Why is gameplay recording so poor on XBOX

So I just came from Playstation 4 to XBOX SS

and I've found that the option for retroactively recording gameplay is shockingly short.

The options are 1 minute of 1080p footage and 3 minutes of 720p footage.

I used to use the recording feature a lot of the PS4 and it allowed up to 1 hour of recorded gameplay and it recorded everyone's voices in the party and sometimes in game. With the recording feature with the Series S it won't even pick up my voice.

The options I've found on reddit are to purchase a capture card or an external HDD, both which are almost the price of the console itself and both don't allow retroactive recording.

Is there something I'm missing? Is Microsoft planning on fixing this?

A big part of gaming is sharing your footage and although 1 hour seems excessive, sometimes I want to record a match or sometimes something only seems worthy of recording with context from a while back.

It just feels frustrating coming from a console released almost a decade ago, upgrading to a next gen console, and not having gameplay recording features built in. I feel like it also discourages new streamers and YouTubers from getting into starting up because the cost of entry can be so high without baked in features that make gameplay sharing easy.

I don't mean to sound like I'm bashing XBOX, I'd really like to stay with the brand, it's just an issue I noticed and was wondering if there was any work arounds or ideas as to if it was being improved?

That's true, but then I can't record voices either, and the SX has the same limitations and both have different SSD sizes.

I guess I'm just struggling to understand how my PS4 with 500GB HDD has the option but to do it with the XBOX I need a capture card that's nearly the price of the console to do it.

I guess where I'm coming from is that gameplay sharing is such a large part of gaming and with these limitations to recording retroactively and not being able to share voices it's a bit jarring.

Does the external HD option extend the option for retroactive recording?

Okay, I work in IT and although I've never built an Xbox I've built enough computers to tell you that isn't true unless there was so little R&D put into gameplay recording that it's now just a mess.

You have two systems, both with completely different specs and both have the same allocated space to share gameplay? Both crushing the 9 year old PS4 in terms of hardware but the PS4 is able to record 60x more gameplay?

Hello again, i work with IT too and as for play on the console the issue is comes simple, the system will always give priority to games than so the need for an external HD for application and better management of the system and Game Plays.

If you leave the system to manage Game Play and don't focus on the game itself it will have to give in somewhere, such as performance or graphics quality, I don't know what ratio Microsoft deploys on Windows that is on Xbox but the external HD remains the best solution, especially for a 500 GB HD like the Series S has.

Hello again, do not know how the new generation system does the management of previous recordings, it should limit in the system because of the cache, however by having more space with the external HD can record what you want and decide with what is next.

Hellp Heeeydevon, as you are on Xbox S Series unfortunately it and limited by the size of the SSD, however you can buy an external disk and use it only for media captures, it does not need to be an SSD, just be an external HD USB 3.0 and put it configured for your captures and you will get more recording time according to the size of the HD.
