Why doesn’t game sound come through my headset when my controller is on a wire?

Firstly, I would like to know the model of your headset and controller. This information will help me provide you with more accurate troubleshooting steps.



In the meantime, I suggest that you try the following steps:



1. Check the audio settings on your Xbox console. Make sure that the audio output is set to "Headset." To do this, go to Settings > Display & Sound > Volume > Headset Audio.



2. Check the audio settings on your controller. Press the Xbox button to open the guide, then go to System > Settings > Display & Sound > Volume > Headset Audio.



3. Try using a different wire to connect your controller to your headset. Sometimes, the wire may be faulty and cause issues with the audio.



4. If the above steps do not work, try resetting your controller. To do this, press and hold the Xbox button on your controller for about 10 seconds until the controller turns off. Then, turn it back on and try connecting your headset again.



5. If none of the above steps work, try updating your controller's firmware. To do this, connect your controller to your Xbox console using a USB cable, then go to Settings > Kinect & devices > Devices & accessories. Select your controller, then select "Device info." If an update is available, follow the on-screen instructions to update your controller's firmware.

Sounds coming from headphones and TV at the same time is normal for the console...the other day I left my stereo on (my TV is wired through it) and couldn't work out why the audio from my headphones sounded different!

As to the audio through a headset being lower quality, that would depend really....if the audio signal for the headset is coming directly from the Xbox (wireless headset or wired), then I'd argue it's better quality than that carried to the TV via the HDMI cable. For me, my wireless headset is plugged into my controller (using an adapter) and the sound quality is miles better than the TV is capable of (is even better than my very good stereo too)

The wired headset doesn’t plug into my controller just the Xbox

I dont have that head set, but if you have a wireless connection to audio and have a wired connection to chat like I do with with my head set you have to turn off the game sound through the sound mixer from the menu and slide it all the way over to the
chat side turning off the game sound that comes through the controller. If you hit your menu button when you have your headset plugged in it should be part of the menu.
