Why does Xbox delete my screenshots after I set as a Background??

Xbox Series X. Every time I set one of my screenshots as a background, The screenshot dissapears from my harddrive? This is UNBELIEVABLY frustrating as these are my best screenshots that I'm setting as the background. I use an external HD to capture content.

Why does Xbox delete my screenshots after I set as a Background??

    Hello Dear User

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

I realize that you've encountered a problem with Xbox delete your screenshots after you set it as background and I understand how you feel.

The issue you're experiencing with Xbox Series X deleting screenshots after setting them as backgrounds is likely tied to how the system handles file storage during this process. Here's a breakdown of possible causes and solutions:

    Why It Happens:

    1. File Movement vs. Copying
When setting a screenshot as a background, the Xbox may move the file to a system-managed folder (for dynamic backgrounds) instead of creating a copy. If the original screenshot is on an external drive, this could lead to unexpected behavior (e.g., the file disappearing from your external drive if moved to the internal drive's storage).
    1. External Drive Compatibility
External drives formatted for Xbox storage (e.g., for games or media) might not retain files in the same way as internal storage. The system may prioritize internal storage for certain operations, leading to conflicts.
    1. Software Glitch
This could be a bug in the Xbox OS, especially if the console isn’t fully updated. Background customization features have occasionally had quirks in past updates.
    How to Fix It:

    1. Save Screenshots to Internal Storage First

Temporarily set your capture location to the internal drive (Settings > Preferences > Capture & Share > Capture Location).

Set the screenshot as your background. If it no longer disappears, the issue is tied to external drive handling.

Afterward, manually move the screenshot back to your external drive via the Capture app.
    1. Manually Back Up Screenshots
Before setting a screenshot as a background:

Use the Xbox Capture app to copy the file to a PC or cloud service (OneDrive/Share via network).

Alternatively, use the Xbox mobile app to download captures to your phone.
    1. Check External Drive Formatting

Ensure the external drive is formatted correctly (NTFS/exFAT for media storage).
    2. Avoid using the drive for both game storage and media captures simultaneously, as this can confuse the system.
    1. Update the Console
Check for system updates (Settings > System > Updates) to ensure you’re on the latest OS version, which may include fixes for this issue.
If the problem persists, you can report it to team Xbox by Provide feedback to Team Xbox | Xbox Support, in the meantime, you can try the following ways to avoid further loss of your screenshots:

    • Use a USB flash drive to manually transfer screenshots from the internal drive to your external storage after setting them as backgrounds.
    • Use the Xbox mobile app to save screenshots directly to your phone/tablet as a backup.

Please feel free to let me know if you have any further updates, thanks.

    Best Regards.

Get the source file for my background

Hello, and thanks for getting in touch. I'm Aileen, and I'm here to provide you with advice as an independent advisor.

Here’s the full breakdown on what’s happening with your missing background image and what you can do about it:

Why is your screenshot no longer listed in Captures?

Xbox only keeps locally saved captures for a limited time. If your screenshot wasn’t:

Uploaded to Xbox Network or OneDrive

    Set to “Keep permanently”

    Recently used or shared

…it may have been automatically deleted by the system to free up space. This is why it no longer appears in the Captures app — it’s not just hidden, it’s gone from your local capture library.

Even though it’s still your current background, Xbox does not store a separate, user-accessible copy of that image. Once set, it becomes part of the system's cache, which you can't extract or browse.

How to preserve your current background before it’s lost

To keep the image before changing anything:

Go to Settings > General > Personalization > My background

When the background is visible, press the Xbox button, then press Y to take a screenshot of your own dashboard

Go to the Captures app and upload that new screenshot to OneDrive

This gives you a fresh copy saved to the cloud, which you can download anytime later.

What happens if you change your background now?

If you change it — even accidentally — that cached image is permanently deleted, and there’s no recovery method. Xbox does not keep a history of past backgrounds.

So if it matters to you, grab that screenshot now before it’s too late.

Please let me know if you need any further assistance. Looking forward to your response.

Screenshots not able to be shared

I also have this problem. Older screenshots give me the option to Like /Share /Set as background /View game Hub

Todays screenshot: Set as background /View game hub

No option to save or share my newest screenshot..

Want to download my background picture

Hello, Mateus. I am aware that the image may not violate the agreement but I believe you misunderstood my question. I am speaking about the set background image on the xbox home that can be accessed via setting and may be set to anything. I am questioning whether or not if there is a way to get a clear shot to screenshot the image on phone or if there is a way I may download my background.
