Why does the Xbox app insist on installing multiple installations of games on my C drive...

I am tired of needing to deleting Sea of Thieves multiple times from my C drive. Why and how is this possible?

I have set it to install on my D drive, but for some reason it installs itself as many times as it can to Windows Apps on my C drive. The windows apps folder is itself a pain to get access to, but my C drive just filling up with copies of Sea of thieves is too much.

The max I have seen is four copies, but I'm sure that if i had more space it would install even more times.

I have experienced this problem on multiple computers on different networks.

Also for some reason it changes the default install folder back to the C drive sometimes and doesn't let me change back to the D drive manually.

At the time of writing SoT is installed to my D drive even though it says the default install folder is Windows Apps on C drive. Windows apps also has two copies of SoT.

    :)

Why does the Xbox app insist on installing multiple installations of games on my C drive without my permission?

Sea of thieves decided to uninstall itself for some reason over night, making it so that I cant play Sea of Thieves today due to the long download time.

If I buy Sea of Thieves on Steam, can I play with the same account as on the xbox app version? That way I wont need to deal with the Xbox app or its version of Sea of Thieves.

    Hi

    Welcome to Microsoft community.

You can go to the following path in windows11, change the Settings, and recheck that the game is correctly installed in the directory you want.

    Hi

    Thanks for your reply.

You can try these steps to log in to Sea of Thieves from steam.

When you launch "Sea of Thieves" through Steam, you need to link an Xbox Live account to your Steam profile before you can enter the game. Here are the steps required to link and unlink your Xbox Live account when needed.

Please note - Your game progress has been linked to your Xbox Live account. Therefore, the progress made and projects obtained using this account on other platforms will also be obtained through Steam. However, if you unlink this account and use another account, you will no longer be able to access the original account progress or projects until you re-link to the account.

When you first launch "Sea of Thieves" and enter the "Start Game" screen, the "Sign in to Xbox Live" dialog box will appear when you attempt to pass through the screen.

"After clicking Sign In, you will be prompted to enter your Xbox Live account details.". After entering the login details and password, the following screen will be displayed.

Pressing "Let's Play Together" will open a Steam link prompt and display a browser window asking you to confirm whether the linked account is correct and whether you want to continue.

Selecting "Yes, Link Account" will confirm that you want to link your Xbox Live account and Steam profile. "If the linked account is incorrect, click Shift+Tab to close the Steam prompt, and then from the main menu, click Log Off at the bottom of the screen or press the X key.". After logging out, you will return to the "Start Game" screen, where you can perform this process again.

Cannot install any game from the Xbox App

Thanks a lot for the followup!

All my drives are NTFS, and I only have 3 drives/partitions right now, and they are C: D: and S:

I want to install on S: only but it keeps insisting to install on C, even though I don't have space left there and it's where my windows is installed. I did actually change the storage settings to install new apps into drive S: but it still didn't help and it insists on C:. I even tried installing a small game to see if it will at least work on C:, but it just kept getting stuck at Preparing 0%

I tried the permissions trick on the folder as well, still didn't help :/

A game displaying Error code: (0xc06d007e). Not starting.

Thanks. I think I know what the problem with this game was - I have a gaming drive (E:) and a Windows installation drive (C:). the Xbox app on pc always tries to default back to C: drive even if you set E: in settings. When the game updated and was installing, I noticed it was installing to the incorrect C: drive. I quickly changed this to E: in settings and hoped it would be ok, seeing as only a small amount of data had started to install.

I think that's where it went wrong.

Anyway, do you know why the drive keeps defaulting back to the Windows installation drive (C:) for game installs even when you change the drive in Xbox App settings? It's very annoying having to keep remembering to make sure it's changed to the E: drive whenever I need to install anything.

Because of this defaulting the Xbox app also keeps placing an 'XboxGames' folder in my C: root, which I have to keep on deleting before I change the game save drive to E: in the Xbox app settings, so the games are installed to the correct XboxGames folder in E:.
