    Why do you need payment method on xbox one to get free games but not on xbox 360?


    I have both a xbox 360 and a xbox one. I am 100% unable to get free stuff on the xbox one, says I need a payment method. On xbox 360 I am able to download free stuff and claim the free xbox one games, but only from the xbox 360.

    Someone coded the xbox one incorrectly.

    Can't download a free game without selecting a credit card

    I'm trying to get a free game that's on the Xbox One, do I need a payment method selected to get it just like the Xbox 360?

    Hello Firebeat,

    You need a valid payment method on your account (the Xbox One only recognises a debit/credit card or a PayPal account), so if you do not have these you will need to "purchase" the free game on an actual Xbox 360 console, after which you can download the
    game on Xbox One from your download history ("Ready to Install" in My Games & Apps).

    The 360 store is set up differently from the store on the One/website. The One store is not set up to recognize your Microsoft account balance as a payment method for 360 content. So in order to make any 360 purchases, free or paid, on the One, you need
    a valid payment option on file

    It asks me for payment for xbox one stuff too, even though it says they are free with gold.

    Im able to get the xbox one stuff without a payment method on my xbox 360 but it is an inconvenience

    Yes unfortunately this is a constant annoyance needing a payment method on your account to buy or even download a free xbox 360 game on your xbox one.

    This is why i still have a 360 sat here to download the free games then when you load up your xbox one the games are in the ready to install folder without needing to add a payment method.

    To download 360 games on Xbox One, you need a valid payment method (credit/debit card, PayPal etc) even to download free games with gold. If you do not have a payment method, your only other option is to use an Xbox 360.

    Unfortunately this is something that is quite annoying, (the reason why i still have a 360 sat behind my tv)

    You have to have a payment method on file if you are trying to download a 360 game onto your xbox one even though the game is free, This is how it has always been and likely will never change as the 360 and the one marketplace are technically speaking completely
    seperate from each other,

    Theres no way around needing a payment method unless you still own your old 360 and simply download the game on there then you can download it on xbox one without the payment method.

    What's wrong with the Avatar Store?!

    If you're using the Xbox One, you'll get this message if you're on a child account or if you do not have a payment method on file (even for free stuff). If payment method is the issue, you need a credit card or Paypal on file. Your Microsoft account balance
    is not seen as a valid payment option for 360 content or avatar content on a One or xbox.com
