Why do i now have to re-assign my headset everytime i turn i my system

Go ahead and
Physically Power Cycle your console and then give it another try. Many times a quick power cycle will do the trick.

Now I don't know what the problem is. When I plugged my headset into my second controller, I don't think it turned off my Kinect mic because I did not have it assigned to my profile, which is why I saw my mic light up. Now I don't know if it was because
of the update or not.

Make sure your Xbox Series S has the latest system update. Go to Settings > System > Console Info & Updates and check for updates. Updating the console to the latest version might resolve any bugs or compatibility issues with your network.

I found a workaround. By assigning going to the working child's account, then Setttings : System : Devices & accessories : Headset : and changing 'Assigned to' to the working child's account, the non-working child's account now works. Bizarre. But it fixes
my problem.

Sorry to hear you are having an issue with your Series X. When you are resetting it, I presume you are turning it off and then turning it on again?

Does this do the same thing on other TV's? I expect it does but thought I would check.

To rule out software, have you reset the console keeping apps and games by going to Settings > System > Console Info > Reset Console.
Choose the option Reset and keep my games & apps.
