Why do I need to buy minecraft for playstation to crossplatform with my friend who uses...

If on Pc you have Minecraft Java you can't do cross-platform games with PlayStation, as this is only a function of Minecraft Bedrock, but you don't need to purchase a game for a platform you don't own, if your friends it's trying to invite you he needs to log into a Microsoft account in his game as well as you in your Minecraft Bedrock and add each others Microsoft accounts as friends

There are two versions of Minecraft for the Xbox One, the bedrock edition and the Xbox One edition, the latter version has been replaced with the former and is no longer updated, the bedrock edition is the current version.

Your son's friends may of invited him to the old version of the game and this might be where the problem arises.

Just to confirm what you wrote:

Your son WAS ABLE to play with THESE SAME friends through his Playstation 4 version of Minecraft?

If so, then those friends certainly have the "new" Bedrock Version of Minecraft.

In that case, check that your son is in fact playing "Minecraft" on the Xbox One (the Minecraft WITHOUT the "Xbox One Version" in the name)

It can also be possible that your son joined the Xbox Insiders Program and is playing a newer Beta version of Minecraft, that his friends don't have.

So when your son and his friends start Minecraft, they should check the Version number of the game shown on the title screen.

I own minecraft "windows 10 edition" on xbox one but isn't availabile on windows 10.... i've buyed it because I thought that I could use it on both platform and have the same edition, with xboxlive functionality. (multiplayer crossplatform and same worlds
