why do I need a credit card to get something that is free ( Games with Gold)

Does anyone else think it is strange that I have a Gold subscription that I have paid for..But For some reason Microsoft needs a credit card on file to download the free games with gold.

So I loaded up the credit card , downloaded the game and then delete the credit card .I think this is rather annoying, I don't like keeping a card on file.

So is this game really free, well I supposedly have already paid for it with my gold subscription right?

when you get something free typically you sometimes need to provide a credit card number or any other information.

But when you buy something like a subscription , then you typically do not have to provide something else when you use it .

Why is a credit card needed to download a FREE games with gold Xbox 360 Game? This is the most dumb and frustrating issue for games with gold. If on a Xbox 360 you don't need a credit card so why need it on the Xbox One. Some people do not want there credit
card on their account for one reason or another so why alienate an entire group of users? If it is free then make it free. I also tried on Xbox.com but the same result...must put in a CC on the account. Microsoft, get it together.

Is there ANY way to get FREE games without having to enter a CC?

The problem existed long before the Games with Gold program.

Basically after Microsoft changed from Microsoft Points to "real world currency" you could not buy games on the Xbox website with your prepaid money.

The way the Xbox 360 store works, you need to "pay" every game, even free games have to be "paid" with 0.00 of your currency (i.e. "free").

If you have a real Xbox 360 console, you can get the game without a payment method.

However on a Xbox One (that also uses the Xbox website as a store backend) and on the Xbox website you will need a payment option like Credit Card or PayPal.

 

I believe they do the same thing with Live and Gamepass when you redeem a trial code.

 

The reason they do this is because although it might actually be free they still technically charge you for it to add it to your billing/order history and in my honest open I believe a firat step in trying to help Xbox gamers feel comfortable with using
their card on their account if they haven't already.
