Why do I have to pay to change my xbox gamertag

When I first created my Xbox profile, it gave me a random name. I changed it to something else, but a bunch of random numbers came at the end because somebody else already had that username. Now I want to change it to a name that hasn't already been taken
because I don't like random numbers being put at the end of my nametag in games, but it says I have to pay $10 for it. TEN DOLLARS! So, I'm wondering if there is a way I can change my gamertag without paying $10.

You're given a free change if you are given a randomly generated tag when you create your account. Once you use the free change, there is not a way to get another one.

yes if you have used the free gamertag change it costs 10$/€.

If you're short on money let me recommend you the MS Rewards program. If you frequently collect points you soon have enough to pay the fee for a gamertag change.

Afterwards you can buy games or add-ons with those points or redeem them for a game pass sub etc.

If you’re being asked to pay for a regular price it means that the system detects that you have already used your free Gamertag change.
