Why do I have to pay for the series s/x version of GTA when I already own the other version?

I had purchased the old gen version then when I got a new gen Xbox I realized If I wanted to play with my friends I would have to buy the others version but it’s the same game so I don’t know why I need to buy the other when I own the old one?

Because they are separate versions. Not the same game

You would need a cross gen version.

Ok I have both versions of GTA downloaded on my series x the Xbox one version works fine on the series x I then downloaded the series s/x version on the series x I then launched the game and it gives the error message

If your friend has the Series X|S version of the game then I'm afraid they can not play other users who only have the Xbox One version of the game. In order to play together, your friend will need own the Xbox One version GTA V or GTA Online for the Xbox One.

GTA+ is only available for the Xbox Series X|S version of the game. If you are using the Xbox One version, then GTA+ will not work. Make sure you are using the Xbox Series X|S version of the game.

Yeah, you have to purchase the Series X|S version if you want to play the next gen version of the game. You do not get it for free, if you already own the Xbox One version of the game.
