Why did Fortnite updates start being 40 GB?

I noticed in the set-up update stage it started to quicken up at around 40-50% then i felt it was going to work and it did! woohoo

Yes, you can add an external. Some of the games being released are upwards of 40-50 GB in size, so that 500 GB HDD can fill up pretty darn fast.

Ok that makes sense but I've done multiple updates already to Fortnite on the Xbox one since using it again and they have all been relatively small never more than I think 5 GB maybe a little more for the new season update but now I've got this big 33GB update so why is it only coming now
