Why can't we schedule Xbox One updates?

I understand, but I'm just explaining why it's like that, as the second option will anyway stop what you are doing most of the time as watching movies or gaming requires Xbox live servers

Well of course it's possible to choose update later and disconnect but, as per the original question, how about the Xbox recognising that you are doing something and delaying for a bit - for example this morning watching a show the update popped up. Two choices continue updating and ruin the recording and miss the recipe I was noting down or dismiss, disconnect and the recording is ruined, I've still missed a chunk of the recipe and rewinding live TV is no good as all I'll get is recipe/update message/recipe.

Suppose it is possible, at the time you choose to update later, you would be desynchronized from the servers and not able to do anything online as all services on the Xbox goes trough the Xbox servers

I am NOT watching a show online.

My Xbox is the centre of my AV setup. It is an entertainment hub.

When I turn on the Xbox everything else springs to life and everything is then watched/controlled via my Xbox. This, if you remember is how MS initially tried to push Xbox One.

Therefore if I'm watching a live show THROUGH the Xbox or a BluRay from my player connected THROUGH the Xbox or am recording a show from my set-top box connected THROUGH the Xbox its absolutely ridiculous that the Xbox forces me to stop watching the show, stop watching the movie or lose my recording whilst my Xbox updates.

I'm not comparing the Xbox update to Windows update (and thank you for assuming I have zero IT knowledge).

I'm asking why the Xbox cannot recognise that it is currently IN USE and maybe wait a little.

Thank you again for the (ever so slightly patronizing) reply. Again I understand syncing to servers to be up to date but a simple 'is the machine actually doing anything critical at this point? OK, lets give it a few minutes' query isn't in anyway possible?
