Why can't I play old saved games from hard drive unless I'm connected to internet on 360?

you have to

1 turn of internet connection or go offline

2 delete the file saved on the hard drive

3 play up to and finish all of sequence 3

4 shut down game and delete current save file from hard drive

(there should be no file saved at all now on drive)

5 reconnect to internet and launch game

achievement should be there as well as ur old file from the cloud

Yes, it's possible. Just use the Hard Drive Transfer Cable to copy all of your data from the old 120 GB Elite Hard Drive to the 250 GB drive for your new system. This also removes your profile, game saves, etc. from the old hard drive. Then you can sell
it with no problem.

As for using 2 360s in different parts of the house... totally possible thanks to the addition of Cloud Game Saves and Roaming Profiles through Xbox Live Gold! You can now log into your Xbox Live Profile from ANY 360, as long as it's connected to the internet!
And you can take saves for games you play on both machines and upload them onto the Cloud Saves server, so they can be accessed from both machines, as long as you have both connected to the interwebz, you'll be good. Hope that helps.

You only really need an official Xbox 360 Slim hard drive if:

• The game insists on using an internal 360 hard drive. There are a select few 360 games that need to install some data from the disc to run, these games need an internal drive.
  
• You still want to play original Xbox games.
  

For almost all other Xbox 360 games you can install to a external hard drive via a USB cable. The Xbox 360 supports external drives up to 2TB. If you connect an standard external hard drive via USB you can just move the game or saves to the external drive.

Unless your Xbox 360 drive is official, you won't be able to play original Xbox games. Most drives are not official. Any official hard drive will be quite old now as Microsoft hasn't made these drives for nearly a decade.

I have an old Xbox 360 I use occasionally for games that are either not BC on the Xbox One/Series X or were never released on PC. I use a 1TB external hard drive. I also want to insure that my Xbox 360s old DVD drive will continue to work into the future, so I install my 360 disc games to the 1TB drive.
