External hdds using buses havw been around since the 486 days / mac

You buy storage cards which run at 4.8gbps and use rdna architecture with direct access ro cpu memory and gpu

Your hdd is limited to 500mbps and based on 20 year old bus which was invented in.the Pentium days which runs usb to usb host to pcie to Northbridge then to cpu memory and gpu and back again

Most games skip even internal hdd and use nvme which is next gen storage as mentioned abive

Programmers would have to write games not to take advantage of that which means LAST gen games not next gen

Pc and most.game.consoles use nvme

Ps5 steam deck rog ally series consoles most pcs get rid od sata drives in favor of nvme only switch doesn't use it though could change in next version

You can store and run your games on storage card or internal memory or you can store it on external.and move the game to internal or storage cards when you want to play it

The only games that would be directly playable from an HDD would be Xbox one games.

Xbox Series X/S games can only be stored but not played from an external HDD. Those can only be played from either the internal ssd or one of the WD or Seagate expansion ssd's that plug into the back.

The reason is the Xbox Series X/S games are setup to take advantage of the speed of the internal ssd. For comparison Internal SSD has raw read speeds of 2.4 GB/s whereas HDDs would only be a max of 500 MB/s.

Why? It was working fine before I formatted it. Now I can’t play any games stored on my hard drive
