Why cant I play my game when there's an update, not putting the user first, sigh!

I don't play my Xbox ONE on a daily basis, having a family doesn't give me a lot of spare time. But when I do turn on my Xbox I want to play a game, hence the reason for turning the Xbox on. But these last 30 days, out of the 10 times, 5 of them gave me
a message I need to update my game or OS first before I could continue, making it impossible to let me play the game. Downloading can take for ages...

As a user I want to turn on my Xbox and play the game at the time-frame convenient to me and not wait for an update to install. Putting the update before playing a game doesn't make me feel Microsoft is putting the user first.

It would be a lot friendlier if the update just downloads in the background and installs when I want it to install, instead of the other way round!

I hope in the future things will change... the PS4 has better user focus

I could use my Xbox offline of course... but that doesn't really solve the real problem!

    :)

Put your console in instant on mode in the power settings then it will download any updates when your console if off.

Was going to say the same thing. I've had my console set to instant on since day one and rarely notice any updates.

True, this could help, but still doesn't solve the problem. I don't use this feature as I find it an energy waste if the device it turned on all week without me playing it. Or solution could be, that what I do now some times. If
I know I want to play, turn on the xbox way in advance. But this is a pretty ridiculous solution if you ask me.

It uses less electricity than say your tv when that is in standby mode.

The console isn't turned on.Never noticed any increase in electricity usage & I've had my console in instant on since launch.

The option is there if you want updates to download while your console is off.

What do you want Microsoft to do, make you a special case and never send you updates?

    Seriously, think before you type.

Games get updated, they have to be these days because bugs get missed etc. also content is pushed out in game updates and not just in DLC.

Multiplayer games all have to be the same version, you cant have person X playing BF1 (version 1.4) and person Y also playing BF1 (version 1.45) it causes problems like you wouldn't believe.

Microsoft heard people complaining when we had the Xbox 360 about the updates, so what did they do? they made a system that could download updates etc when it was switched off. Its not their fault that you find this solution "pretty ridiculous". This is
the only solution that they have, if you don't like it perhaps jump ship and get a Nintendo Switch, I have one and you very rarely get updates on that system, and when you do they are fairly small updates.

I do want MS or game developer updating my games, but I want to install it at my convenience. When I turn on the xbox to play a game, I want to play a game and not wait for an update to finish.

True, for multiplayer games it can be different, but for single-player, let my xbox download during my game play, and install the update next time I start the game again. or give me the option to install the update... Much friendlier!

not really, tv in standby is about 0.5W, the xbox in standby is about 12Watt. Logical, for the whole network stuff.

Is 12W a lot, not really, but if I only play a game once a week, and my xbox is on 24/7 consuming 12W, that can add up. Mind you, my whole house uses 60Watt when everybody's a sleep.

It doesn't use that amount of power in instant on mode unless it's different in different countries.

The option is there to download updates in the background.

I have a 2nd xbox one in my bedroom which isn't in instant on mode & rarely gets used & to be honest it only takes 10-15 minutes at the most to download any updates needed when I do use that console.

Do what I do...Buy a wi-fi plug-in controller/timer (or just a timer) I put the xbox one in stand by mode. Then I plug it into my controller. I can operate that plug remotely via wi-fi, plus I can program it with a timer (as a bonus, it tracks electricity
usage over time). Set the timer to turn on for a couple hours each night (or three times a week for 2 hours each) or during the day if you are working away from home.. All controlled from my phone or tablet or computer and I can monitor it away from home,
    just in case I forget.

Why don't you simply keep the console disconnected from the internet?

It sounds as if you mostly play single player so the lack of an internet connection wouldn't be an issue, unless of course you are desperate to see Achievements pop up during gameplay but you would be able to enjoy your games quickly.

Then when you have a little more free time just enable the connection and do the pending updates. Just because something is internet capable, doesn't mean you need to use that connection all the time.

Thanks all, some good solutions, didnt think of getting a timer thing, that could work.

12W is what microsoft has in the specs, I got it from their website

And disconnect from the internet, thats indeed another solution. And indeed, the lack of internet is not really an issue.

Although nice solutions, it still doesn' t make me feel the user's needs are being put first by MS. I am guessing an xbox user's first priority is to play a game and not wait for an update. Just do all updating in the background
and inform me when things are ready to install, and give me the option to install before turning the xbox off.
