Why can’t I make a gamer tag without a hashtag even though the name isn’t taken?

Also caps doesnt make a name different

So if you see gamertag free it maybe under Gamertag or GAMEr tag.

It would be considered taken hence the hashtag trigger

You will have to accept the hashtag or change the spelling

So yesterday I tried to make a new gamer tag and it showed that there were no hashtags and when I purchased it it only changed my game gamer tag not the main one. I’m frustrated because I thought that it would change the main gamer tag that everyone else sees but it didn’t. I’ve checked and no one else has the gamer tag that I’m trying to create, and whenever I try to do it, it always add a hashtag after, is there anything I can do to remove the hashtag?

If it has a hashtag then its definitely taken.

Keep in mine the system doesnt recognize spaces as making a gamertag unique so gamertag and gamer tag for example would both be considered the same gamertag.

If you search up the gamertag you want it won't show up in the results unless you type it in exactly as the person has it.

I’m afraid to say, but if a suffix is being added when you try to change your gamertag, this means that the one without the suffix is not available.

Currently, it is not possible to remove the suffix if the automated system is showing it.

Well regardless of if you pay or not you will get a random set of hashtag

The reason for it is because its taken

If you didn't want the hashtag you shouldn't have accepted

It means someone already took it which 2 others have either use a different spelling and no spaces and caps doesnt make it different you MUST actually make it different and pay for it and watch to see if it gicea you a hashtag

If you want a different one

We could always go back to the old system where if the name is taken you just can't have it

This is the reason for the hashtag since people wanted names already taken without respelling or waiting for expiry that may or may not come

Xbox ignores spaces when it comes to unique gamertags. For example, my gamer tag is . If someone would try to make Derp Crawler in older days it would tell them that gamertag is taken, now it just gives them numbers after.

The guy who has the tag without spaces is original name that's why he doesn't have hashtag and numbers after.

It's because in their databases Microsoft stores Gamertags without spaces. Like Major Nelson is stored as MajorNelson.

If you want to have unique gamertag without suffix, you need to come up with one. On Gamertag change screen it tells you if Gamertag is unique or not.
