Why are captures auto deleted from an external drive on the Xbox Series X

Please try a cache reset, which may be the cause of the problem.

1. Press and hold the Power button on the front of your Xbox One until the console turns off.

2. Unplug the power cord from the back of your Xbox One.

3. Wait a minute, and then plug the power cord back in.

4. Press the Power button on your Xbox One to turn it back on.

5. Your cache should be clear at this point.

After this, make a new clip and check if the same thing happens to you, if so, perform the following process:

1.- Disconnect the console for a few minutes from the power.

2.- Try plugging it into a different outlet.

3.- Being turned off, keep pressed the Synchronize button (this button is the one we use to link controls) and Eject button (this button is the one we use to remove the discs, in the All digital or Series S edition do the process omitting this button), and without releasing them turn on the console.

Continue pressing both buttons until the console emits two power on sounds, you can release the Sync and Eject buttons after the second power on tone.

The console should power on and take you directly to the Xbox Startup Troubleshooter.

Select the option to reset your Xbox to factory defaults (you can choose the option to keep your games and applications).

I have had screenshots and video (which is laggy/stuttering) deleted off of my Series X internal drive as well as on Xbox live. It’s utterly broken and appalling that a software company has messed up the software on their flagship console so badly and have yet to rectify the issue for over 9 months.

It auto deletes. Why though - it’s my drive and my content, I gave no permission to delete my content.

Why can I not transfer my captures from internal to external?

Why can I not upload to Xbox live if using an external drive?

60 measly seconds for 4K, 1 paltry minute for 1080p, three meager & blurry minutes for 720p. It’s laughable. My PS4 allowed me to record an hour of PREVIOUSLY played footage. Perfect for capturing long sweaty sessions in R6 or Hunt:Showdown, not the rubbish ‘record from now’ you get with an external drive.

All clips are dull, soulless garbage anyway due to the lack of party chat sucking all the human element and nuance. Again something the competition we’re doing on inferior hardware years ago.

No basic video editor to patch clips and screens together and make semi-pro content. Again something the PS4 has been doing for years with Share Factory. What on earth are MS playing at? Do they seriously expect me to be uploading dozens of 3 minute videos to YouTube in 720p every time I have a good game/match?

No ability to rotate or crop screenshots. In 2021!

I’ve enjoyed my Series X immensely, but the capture and DVR problems and just general lack of options really, really sours the experience for me, especially as I’m coming from older hardware that is far more capable in this regard.

First, thank you for your reply. So what I'm gathering is that even though my clips are off the Xbox network, and saved on my external hard drive, they are still subject to deletion? Why even give the option to store game clips to external drives if they will just be deleted anyway? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of this option?Also,

"Viewing it yourself counts as a view and saves a capture from deletion."

This does not apply to me because I've viewed my own clips several times and they still auto-delete.

I'll just save myself the headache and store them locally from now on.

Use a capture card like Avemedia.

The auto delete after a set time frame is also done in external drives to ensure storage doesn't get completely occupied and is under check.

I'm afraid it won't ever be 'configurable'. The real reason why your games can't be downloaded to the external drive is because you can't actually run Series X|S games from an external drive.

External hard drives are far too slow to run Series X|S games. They need to be run either from the internal drive - which is a fast NVME SSD - or the optional memory expansion cards for the Series X|S consoles. Not even SATA based external SSD's are considered fast enough for X|S games.

You can move Series X|S games for archive purposes to copy back to these faster storage locations to play, but you can't run Series X|S games from external storage.

Games that have not been optimised for Series X|S have no such limitations.

Not sure why the 'Independent Advisor' doesn't know this well known fact.
