^^^ people at the reveal event Discussed trying out that Mars Demo, it's real. I think you need to watch the video again and CAREFULLY look through the Mars image. You can clearly see the room walls and objects behind the image. The camera used to film that
perspective is the same rig used on stage for the Holo Studio demo so the audience could see what the glasses see.

 

That was my point. You can still see your "stuff".

I'm not bashing the tech. Med students doing virtual surgeries in their living room, aircraft techs learning how to rebuild engines at home, etc......great stuff.

But gaming....in the world of 1080p/60 playing BF4 with a transparent image in your living room is something I just don't see any appeal in. From a graphics standpoint I'm probably one of the most lenient people here as far as what I'll play but even I wouldn't
have any desire to do that.

 

We have been through this before! You still use your TV! The rest of the scene that isn't displayed on the screen is displayed in your room! Whether that be a wall, flying Debri, bullets/rockets.

With me? That's the first I've heard that it would be implemented that way. What's being developed that is using that feature?

 

You thinking its a total replacement of the TV screen. Yes discussed from page 2 onward.

 

That was the hud discussion which I can see being implemented. That can be transparent much like it is already being used by the military in jets, etc but adding actual game graphics (debris, walls, etc) you go back to it being a significant graphics reduction
and I don't the upside to that.

This isn't going to be cheap so I don't see gamers spending the money to have a floating hud that we already have on the screen.

Unless they decide to tether us to the One this thing just doesn't have the horsepower to render the graphics to make it appealing. Even if they did something like a lower resolution car interior for Forza you'd still need a controller because I don't see
the input delay being acceptable for any twitch game.

 

You are really frustrating.

If you can create a HUD you can create the graphics. The demos showed pretty good graphics as it is, so I don't see how you would think this can't be done. Also who said anything about playing without the controller. You keep missing the term " integration"

 

The frustration is mutual. You're making a jump to something that wasn't discussed at the announcement or in development by anyone (at least that's released any info about it).

It can't be done because to render HD graphics you'd need a One in those glasses which simply doesn't fit. Part of the usefulness to the Hololens is the ability for it to recognize your hand movements making a controller unnecessary. That works with tech
apps and board games but not in big AAA titles where input delay is important.

I'm looking at it from the perspective of what we have seen it do and applying it to gaming not from a wish list of what I hope it may do. The Kinect was the same way at launch, people went on about all the innovation it would bring and wonderful things
it would go but none of it was based on fact. The Kinect was MS's fault for overhyping, in this case I think it's gamers giving the Hololens gaming applications that we will never see and overhyping it.

 

I would just like to point out, That while i applaud Microsoft for their attempt into what is once again, a one horse race, designing and manufacturing a product, that is in all intents and purposes, an excellent idea.

I believe they are marketing this to the wrong people with their demo's, They should not be marketing this item to the gaming society yet, they should be doing their fullest to market this to the companies of the world.

And for those that seem to hate VR, even with a passion, either for some misguided hate of Valve/Sony/Oculus, or because they think it is just too Gimmicky, or that it is never going to lift off, could i please remind you. We have 3 companies making what
is essentially a VR headset

HTC/Valve - VR Headset

Oculus/PC - Vr Headset

Sony/Project Morpheus - VR Headset

Microsoft/Hololens - A hologram image displayer

I am sure that quite a few people remember the old HD/Blu ray, and i will go back as far as Beta Max vs VHS battle.

The public in the end only support the product that has the biggest backing and appeal. And with 3 companies all getting in on the full VR Bandwagon, and 1 doing hololens. What do you think the companies are going to make more games for. When they can have
a big piece of the gaming market with the PC and PS4, or just the XBox One.

It will be like the Kinect all over again, with little support and nothing seriously good coming out on it.

I apologise if that makes people on here mad, but generally it is the same principle.

 

And some of the people here that are describing what we'll see from the Hololens as far as gaming ( HD graphics from glasses and still using a controller) are actually describing the VR systems rather than the Hololens.

I agree I think the MS using Minecraft in the demo was a mistake. You've got gamers hoping for something great when the tech's applications are much more exciting for non-gaming uses.

 

Sorry if ihave the ability to see the possibilities of the glasses instead saying that I can't therefore it won't work for gaming, like yourselves. Who cares if 3 companies have VR going at the same time. They will eventually realise that no matter how good
it is people can't walk around in the real world with a TV set strapped to the front of their face. If anything should be referred to as a gimmick it's the oculus and Morpheus.

 

Morpheus is looking awesome, Oculus is Facebook owned so I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole no matter how good it is, Hololens is sounding very interesting indeed. Also, I heard one of the designers working on the hololens died in a car accident, Rest

Sheesh - I thought it was obvious but let me explain...

In the demo when MS show Minecraft on the coffee table - you can NO LONGER SEE the coffee table (or the parts they don't want you to see). Therefore HoloLens obviously has the ability to control the transparency level of what it is showing you.

So if you want 100% VR - the graphics just need to ensure there is no transparency to the real world.

That's the point - HoloLens is so flexible in its use that it is the one product that does everything; so in my opinion its a no brainer.

I'm just surprised it took so long for Randver to start knocking it....

 

I'm not knocking Hololens. I see some excellent applications for non-gamming genres (which I've made very clear numerous times in this thread).

This is a gaming forum and I'm not seeing a gaming application for it. The hardware isn't in the glasses to do what many of you expect it to do. Look at the size of your One, why is it so big if they can fit that performance in a pair of glasses?

Those of you that are "seeing the possibilities" aren't basing it on the reality of the device. There is a reason the VR devices tether you to a console or PC...they need the horsepower.

Hololens could give us board games or simplistic pixel games and are gamers going to spend the money for the Hololens to play those? Considering the response those games get here then I'd guess no.

Where are you guys getting this information that gaming applications will be anymore than that? This is the Kinect all over again.....people are pulling features out of the air based on what they think it could do rather than what's actually being developed
for it.
