Whenever I try to use my external hardrive it says that I have to pick a folder

Regardless of whatever folder I pick it says "You can't set your default folder location to that one. Try another one" or "You can't change your default install location to that folder while it is in use". I already reinstalled the Xbox app, uninstalled the gaming services thing and reinstalled it and repaired the gaming services app along with restarting my computer and restarting Xbox Accessory Management, Xbox Live Game Save, Xbox Live Auth Manager, Xbox Live Networking Service by going to services.msc. I have had this problem for a long time.

The game files are locked behind a folder on the external HDD called Windows Apps. I cannot access it, or copy this folder. If I try and use the external hard drive as my default location for installing apps on my desktop, it says I have to delete all contents
on the hard drive first. Unfortunately the links you gave havent helped

You should be able to use an external usb hardrive as well as the games you already have installed on your xbox, as long as it meets the requirements for downloading and storing games. I have a 3tb hardrive and use my xbox hardrive as well for downloading
and storing games and it works just fine, you just have to connect it to the usb port of your xbox for it to be recognized as an external device.

Thanks for the replies. I have a WD external hardrive but I have tried using that with my Xbox and it did not even recognize it as being plugged in. ShoPastry, do you know if there is a way to make my WD hardrive compatible with xbox?
