1.16 is the Beta version of the game. You would need to have signed up for the beta to be able to play on this version.

Thank you for posting on the Xbox forums. This means that one of you guys are on an outdated version of the game, and need to update Minecraft. It could also mean that one of you is a part of the Minecraft Beta. If this is the case, then you would not be
able to play with each other. Which one of you is on 1.16?

1.16 is the beta version of the game. To be able to join your friend you would either have to sign up for the beta or your friend needs to opt out of the beta.

1.14 version is the general release which you will be able to play on realms with.

I am having same issue, my friend has xbox one 1.16 nether update version and i have the nintendo switch 1.14.3 version and it will not let me into realm. The realm acct/world was created on my friend’s xbox one. Is there any solution to this problem?

As the others have said previously, your friend on Xbox is in the Minecraft Beta. The only way you would be able to join their realm is if they left the beta and downgraded to the "current" version. Good Luck!

Not sure if it is still possible but you might have different versions. When I downloaded the Minecraft better together beta on my one. I could not join my windows 10 version until I downloaded the beta for win 10 version also. You or your friend might have
the win 10 version while the other has the new better together version of Minecraft.
