Go to windows settings > apps > search for gaming services app > click on it and select advanced options.

After that, click repair and then restore, open the app and try again.

Thanks for the tips. Though it did not directly fix my issue, it certainly helped find the solution to what has worked for me. This is how i've managed to fix my issue.

When i got to the part in your tips to repair the gaming service app, i found out that the gaming service app wasn't on my laptop.

When i tried to install the gaming service app from the windows store, windows store indicated the app was incompatible with my version of Windows as i was running a 32bit version.

I upgraded my Windows 10 to the 64bit version and reinstalled Minecraft for windows 10. That automatically installed the gaming service app and hey presto, Minecraft is working on my laptop!
