When I want to add a friend it gives me that I can't play multiplayer with my friends

You can simply sign in to https://account.xbox.com/settings and from there make sure that these settings are set to “allow” or “everyone”:

* You can join cross-network play

* You can see and upload community creations

* You can communicate outside of Xbox Live with voice & text

* Others can communicate with voice, text, or invites

* You can play with people outside of Xbox Live

* You can create and join clubs

* You can join multiplayer games

Make sure to hit “submit” when you made any changes.

Just to add. My daughter using her child account seems to be able to play her friends now but not sure if its to donwith me messing with the settings or not.

When we (my daughter and I) want to play together, it gives me the timeout error.

privacy settings with our guide. You will want to ensure they are open to add friends and play online. If you are on a child account you will want to have your parents help you

I love both. Multiplayer games for when I want to kill some fools with friends and single player for when I want some time to myself. I probably play them both equally. Now if we take friends out of the equation Im a single player guy all the way. I
just can't play mp games anymore without friends. Even games I love can't hold my attention for more than a match without a buddy.
