When I try to add a new email to my account it says the email is already taken but the...

I'm trying to add my new email as alias on my old gamertag but it doesn't work!

I select "Add an existing email address as a Microsoft account alias" and than I put my email @outlook.com when a message comes up "This email address is already taken. Please try another one"

Is there another way to change the email associated to my old gamertag? Thanks

I understand you wanted to add a new email to your account. That error message means that your email address is an existing Microsoft account like @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @live.com, etc or it could be possible that your email is already associated with an Xbox account. Lastly, it could also be possible that your email was at one point associated with a Microsoft Account.

I should also say... I've tried to follow the instructions of changing the account (by creating an alias, and then making this new alias a primary) but when I attempt to add the outlook.com account (in the "add and existing account" field) I get the following
error...

"This email address is already taken. Please try another."

Hmm... why is this made sooooo difficult? Anyone know how to change an email account associated with an xbox live account?

If the email address is part from a Microsoft domain (@outlook.com @hotmail.com etc) is not possible to add it as an existing alias.
Due to each Microsoft domain email is linked automatically to a Microsoft account.

in this case you have 2 options, create a new @outlook address or add non Microsoft domain email address (@gmail.com @yahoo.com @icloud.com etc)

That doesn’t work. It says this email already has an account. When I sign into my Xbox account with that email it comes up with another gamertag that isn’t mine that I’ve never used

Thats because the new alias (if its a Microsoft email) would have to be one that doesn't already exist because It creates a new Microsoft email when you go to add a new alias.
