When I press my buttons on the controller it does not respond How do I fix this?

Try resetting the controller, follow the below steps

Hard Reset:
A hard reset is more thorough and can help if your controller is not responding as expected.

Turn off your Xbox console.
If the controller is connected wirelessly, press and hold the Xbox button on the controller for about 10 seconds. The controller will power off.
If the controller is connected via USB, unplug the USB cable.
If your controller has a removable battery pack, take out the batteries.
Wait for a few seconds to ensure any residual power is drained.
Reinsert the batteries or plug in the USB cable.
Turn on your Xbox console.
Press the Xbox button on the controller to turn it on. The controller should resync with the console.
Factory Reset (Advanced):
A factory reset of a controller is rarely necessary and should be used as a last resort. This will erase all pairing and customization settings from the controller.

Turn off your Xbox console.
If the controller is connected wirelessly, press and hold the Sync button on the controller (located next to the USB port).
While holding the Sync button, press and hold the Xbox button on the controller.
Continue holding both buttons for about 10 seconds.
Release both buttons.
Turn on your Xbox console.
Press the Xbox button on the controller to turn it on. The controller will be reset to its factory settings and will need to be paired with the console again

When you press the XBox Button on the controller, does it respond at all? Do you get green lights that just circle around? Or does it do nothing at all?

Yes this has happened to one of my controllers as well!!!! When I press the A button on the xbox it makes a sound (!?!?!) HOWEVER, it does not respond. Example: I have a game loaded in the tray and I'm on the xbox home screen, I hover over my game and press
A to start playing. The xbox will make the chime noise as it would when you press A except it does not start the game. It just makes the sound but does not perform the function. How is this even possible? And YES i have my controller updated with the latest
software. It has been persistent in the last two updates. The A button will perform the button ONLY after spamming it for about 7-10 presses. Yeah, thats kind of a big deal. Please fix this software issue. dont even get me started about the joy sticks. those
things are junk and i have to keep getting new controllers. Please.
