If you register your telephone number with the Telephone Preference Service
http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/ you won't get unsolicited sales calls from third parties, regardless of whether you ticked any boxes or not. When your number is registered, it makes cold calling your number a criminal offense.

The system only applies to the UK though, so it won't stop foreign call centres contacting you.

thanks for your help. is there a telephone number in UK to call them to ask what's happened? also, do Ban's apply to children too? not that they should not have to apply the rules but highly likely a child has no idea about rules and the code of conduct!!
