What do I need to play Minecraft across Xbox and Nintendo Switch

My son has an xbox and he wants to play Minecraft with his friend who has a Nintendo Switch.

My son signed into his Microsoft account and he could see his friend but couldn't add him.

His friend with the Nintendo switch couldn't see my son.

What are we doing wrong, do we need an Xbox live subscription??

I'm not entirely sure on the Nintendo side. They do have an online subscription service as well and the player does need to connect an MS account I believe.

Thanks, what about for the nintendo switch player. Do they need something similar or is it just the xbox player that needs xbox live.

Only there is conflicting information, I've read we only need a MS account to play across platforms?
