Sounds like a drive problem. Are you able to play games with ease? Or is it just the CD ripping? Also, what kind of CD are you ripping? How big is each song? I know ripping CDs take quite a while sometimes, a whole CD for me can take a while, maybe 15 minutes,
but it does sound weird that it takes that long for one song.

I have noticed the exact same sound and like di5codonk3y question whether this noise is right. In fact I have set up a advanced replacement because I feel the noise does not sound right. Why should the noise be excessive when at the dashboard and then
gone when playing games, surely this should be the other way round? Is the xbox defragmenting the drive or something at the dashboard? Wish I knew if this was normal. Has anyone else noticed also after removing a cd from the drive that the xbox cd drive
will make a noise like it rewinding something?

Okay. Well I can apparently recover it on a USB drive, but not on my hard drive? This is weird.

The Cloud isn't possible we don't have internet at our Cottage.

Is it Possible to use a USB flash drive with exfat

Also would it be possible to copy all those 76 CDs that are now on my Dads hard Drive to a Memory Stick to make it faster getting the songs onto my HDD. It was a Chore Ripping all those CDs. I took the time to rip all the CDs so my dad didn't have to swap
discs.
