I thought with the updated gamertag system to support different languages and styles we'd finally be able to use the - and _ symbols but we cannot? I thought the new system was using a new Unicode system and would ballow for symbols to be used? Have I misunderstood?

gamertags are used across services, so even if you can't add the gamertag on Xbox Live then it may still be in use.

So basically when the system says that the gamertag is in use, then it is not available.

The only thing you can do is to choose a different gamertag.

Thanks for reaching out to us in the forums with this question about the new Gamertags. In regard to not seeing your new Gamertag on the Xbox or on Xbox.com,
you will see the new gamertag format on console later this year after a system update. As we transition our gamertag system it will take time to update all experiences.

Hello, there is no need to contact support. Your son has the correct gamertag, which was changed under the new system. Games still use the old system and will display the old gamertag until 2020. Even then only new games and certain old games will support
the new system. There was an option to change the 'old system' gamertag while you were creating the new one but now it's too late to do it for free.

I believe that's normal. Our old gamertag under the old gamertag system is still in use by other games such as 360 games and other games that don't support the new gamertag system.

You can change the old gamertag by going to https://social.xbox.com/ChangeGamerTag and if you tried to update your gamertag to a new one, you could see the option to customize the old one there.

I thought games that don't support the new gamertag system use the "Xbox games that don't support the new gamertag system* and all Xbox 360 experiences" gamertag? So are you saying a game that doesn't support the new gamertag system can still use the "Xbox one console and Xbox apps" gamertag, but not support the suffix styling?
