"We copied 87 captures to New Volume (D:) 18 captures weren't copied to external storage"

I logged into my xbox yesterday and got a message that all my captures were going to be deleted unless I backed them up. Of course they tried to sell me additional cloud storage, but I have a 4TB media drive that I can back it up to. So I thought it would be simple process of moving my captures from the xbox cloud storage to my HD. The only thing I could find was to copy, not move. No big deal, I'll just copy the files then delete them from my cloud. Only problem? Every time I try this it fails to copy all of the files. I get an error message:

"We copied 87 captures to New Volume (D"We copied 87 captures to New Volume (D:) 18 captures weren't copied to external storage" :) 18 captures weren't copied to external storage"

But it doesn't tell me why and, even worse, doesn't tell me which files weren't copied. So I don't know which ones to delete and which ones to keep. It doesn't even tell me how to access the files that were copied to my HD to check. So I tried doing it again, hoping it would tell me which ones are already on the HD. It didn't and just tried to copy them all over again. I got a similar error to the one above, but it was a different number of captures that weren't copied. It seems arbitrary. So I tried selecting only the older captures and got this error:

"We copied 45 captures to New Volume (D"We copied 87 captures to New Volume (D:) 18 captures weren't copied to external storage" :) 12 captures weren't copied to external storage"

The only way I can think of solving this is to copy each file one at a time and then delete it from the cloud one file at a time, but that would take hours considering I have 105 captures. Please tell me there's an easier way to do this. And no, I don't want to pay for more cloud space.

    :)

    Hello JRMurray,

Thank you for posting in the Microsoft Community.

I'm sorry to hear that some of your captures were not copied to your external storage. This could be due to several reasons, such as insufficient space, corrupted files, or incompatible formats.

One possible solution is to try copying the files in smaller batches, rather than all at once. This may help to identify which files are causing the error and allow you to copy the remaining files successfully. Another option is to try using a different external hard drive or USB drive to see if that resolves the issue. Additionally, you can try resetting your Xbox and then attempting to copy the files again. If none of these solutions work, you may need to contact Xbox support for further assistance.

We're looking forward to hearing from you. If there are any inquiries about our description or if there are any misconceptions, do reply to the post.

I'm having the same issue. I have plenty of space on my harddrive, none of the files were corrupted, and there were no formatting issues. The only thing that worked for me was to painstakingly manually copy each item one at a time to my external harddrive. They want to threaten us with deleting our captures after 90 days starting in January and then make it difficult to back them up.

    Backup gaming clips

    Hello Kursaalflyer,

Thank you for your quick response.

It appears that the capture location for your external drive is saved to GameDVR folder and XboxCapture copies folder. When copying multiple copies it goes directly to Xbox Capture Copies folder while captures clip is directly saved to GameDVR folder.

The GameDVR folder in external storage is a folder that contains the game clips and screenshots that you have recorded using the Xbox Game DVR feature on your console. The Game DVR feature allows you to capture your gameplay moments and share them with your friends or on social media. After recording clips, your external drive can now be plugged into a PC, where the traditional video files can be extracted. This essentially turns your console into a simple capture card, allowing recordings to be locally transferred for use in PC-based editing software. All files created by Game DVR can be found under the "Game DVR" folder automatically created on your drive.

The Xbox capture copies folder in external drive is a folder that contains the copies of the game clips and screenshots that you have recorded using the Xbox Game DVR feature on your console and then transferred to your external drive. The Xbox Game DVR feature allows you to capture your gameplay moments and share them with your friends or on social media. By transferring your game captures to an external drive, you can save space on your internal drive, backup your captures, and access them on other devices.

You can edit both the files saved on the GameDVR folder and the Xbox capture copies folder using PC editing tools. The difference is that the files on the GameDVR folder are the ones that you have recorded directly to your external drive by setting it as your capture location, while the files on the Xbox capture copies folder are the ones that you have copied or moved from your internal drive to your external drive. Both folders contain the same type of files, which are MP4 video files for game clips and PNG image files for screenshots.

I am getting an error when copying captures from my xbox to my drive

Hello, Secret my name is Oskayra I am independent advisor and I will be happy to help you today.

I understand your frustration with the error message "Your captures weren't copied" when trying to move them from your Xbox to an external drive. This is a common issue, but there are several solutions you can try to fix it quickly before your captures are deleted.

Here are some troubleshooting steps you can experiment with:

    1. Check USB drive compatibility:

Ensure your external drive is formatted to NTFS. FAT32 format isn't compatible with capturing large files.
Verify the drive has sufficient storage space available to accommodate the captures you're trying to transfer.
    2. Try different USB ports:

Connect your external drive to different USB ports on your Xbox. Sometimes, specific ports might encounter connectivity issues.
Ensure the USB cable is securely connected to both the Xbox and your drive.
    3. Restart Xbox and external drive:

A simple restart can sometimes resolve temporary glitches. Turn off your Xbox and external drive and unplug them from power for a few minutes before restarting them.
    4. Copy captures in smaller batches:

If you're transferring large capture files, try copying them in smaller batches instead of all at once. This can help avoid errors and ensure successful transfer.
    5. Clear Xbox capture cache:

Go to Settings > System > Storage > Manage storage > Clear local saved games > Yes.
This clears temporary cache data related to captures, potentially resolving transfer issues.
    6. Try a different external drive:

If possible, try using a different external drive to copy your captures. This can identify whether the issue lies with the specific drive or a broader Xbox problem.

    Additional Tips:

Update your Xbox console to the latest software version.
Ensure your captures are not corrupted or damaged.
Consider using the Xbox mobile app to download and transfer captures to your phone or PC.

I hope this helps! Don't hesitate to ask if you have any further questions or need additional clarification.
