"we can't find a microphone for these people"

My nephew is unable to communicate via game chat or Xbox party chat. He keeps getting the message "we can't find a microphone for these people". He is unable to hear me through his mic and I can not hear him. He can hear me through the TV when the mic is
unplugged.

I have tested everything for weeks trying to fix this. I have bought him a second mic and a second controller, still the problem is present. Both mics work perfectly fine when plugged into his phone. Both his controllers are brand new with no other issues
(this is a brand new Xbox One S). The mic sometimes works, but only for a very brief moment then it stops working again for days/weeks.

I've done a full restart on the Xbox, updated the controller firmware for both controllers, gone through all troubleshooting steps with Microsoft, and nothing works. He lives in a different state than me and he is pretty young, so going through all these
steps with him is very difficult and time consuming. Can anyone help?

If you use a headset with a 3.5 mm plug and 3 rings on the connector, know that there are two standards for those headset connectors called "OMTP" and "CTIA".

If you have 3 headsets with a OMTP setup, then the headset is "talking" to the ground pin of the controller, and the controller is "listening" for the microphone on the ground-pin of the headset.

You need to get a CTIA to OMTP adapter, which simply reverses these two contacts. You can get these adapters online or in most cellphone stores.

I know that me personally I was trying to use headphones that had chat capability but I never could get it to work correctly (like the issues you are having) until I bought a Stereo headset Adaptor. If you have not purchase one of these you might try that

Try performing a hard reset EXACTLY like this.

Hold the power button on the console for 8 seconds or until the power shuts down completely. Unplug the power cord from the back of the console for 5 minutes. Plug the power cord back in and restart the console.

If that doesn't work try testing with a different controller/headset.

Hello! Im sorry about the issue your experiencing. The 3.5 mm jack is supposed to be a universal outlet for multiple headsets but some headsets will work but not to the full capacity of an actual xbox one headset. Your console uses 8 different settings off
your router to make sure your able to matchmake and communicate with people. If its not your network its an actual hardware problem between the controller and the headset. Just like a phone charger the plug or the port can be compromised to the point the hardware
has to be replaced. If you have warranty on your console please contact us to see about the possibilities of

replacing the controllers you have.

Not all headphones use the same hardware.

Some headphone wont work on my controller directly plugged into the controller, but work fine when using the headset adapter.
