Video from NAS displays 4:3 and not in widescreen on Xbox One

As the title says, ALL my .AVI videos on my NAS are playing/displaying in 4:3 ( in fact I would say 4:4 or square).

    They are all encoded as follows;

ID :0

Format :MPEG-4 Visual

Format profile :Simple@L1

Format settings, BVOP :No

Format settings, QPel :No

Format settings, GMC :No warppoints

Format settings, Matrix :Default (H.263)

Codec ID :DX50

Codec ID/Hint :DivX 5

Duration :24mn 2s

Bit rate :2 476 Kbps

Width :720 pixels

Height :576 pixels

Display aspect ratio :16:9

Frame rate :25.000 fps

Standard :PAL

Color space :YUV

I never had any problems/issues playing these files on my old PS3 (which I sold to buy this piece of crud) and I am now forced to use my old Mac Mini with XBMC to play them. In fact I have not turned on the Xbox One since wasting a good 6 or more hours trying
to get them to play in widescreen.

The Xbox One is a over glorified door stop unless this issue with video playback in 4:3 is sorted. WHY are there no options in the video player to control the displayed video ? From what I have read this also happens with DVD's which I have yet to try as
they are all packed away since everything in on the NAS.

Between all my movies and TV shows there are well over 1200 video's and there is "no way in hell" I am going to rip and re-encode all the DVD's/BD's again, as it is it has taken me almost 5 years to do them all.

NOT a happy camper, I only bought the Xbox One AFTER it was confirmed that "support" for external video was to be implemented in a forthcoming update.

    :)

xbox games wont display in widescreen!?!?

    Hey Gang,

Ive been an original xbox owner since xmas of 2001. I am on my 3rd unit and still going strong. I love the original xbox. Its just excellent.

Im having some relationship issues though. So ive come to the internet in search of help!

I recently obtained a Sony Wega kd-34xbr960. Im sure everyone here knows what that is but just in case it is a 34 inch widescreen CRT that can put out a 480p, 720p, 1080i signal. It was meant to compliment my classic xbox so i could finally play all my beloved games in widescreen and hd!

I have the original microsoft brand component xbox cables.

The issue is that not even half of my titles that are supposedly widescreen friendly will display in widescreen. There is a page on wiki.com called the List of Xbox games with HD support, that says about HALF of all original xbox games support widescreen 16 : 9

on the xbox dashboard i have it set to widescreen. I have it set to 480p, 720p, and 1080i.

On the tv i just have the video setting to normal, aka it just outputs whatever signal it gets. (i think?)

    Freedom fighters
    Xmen legends
    xmen legends 2
    Hulk ultimate destruction
    and dragons lair 3d

all of these games pop into widescreen mode upon sticking in the game CD. They all look amaaaaazing, and when i press the display button on my TV it shows that the TV is displaying a16:9 720p signal, and for dragons lair it even shows its displaying at 16:9 1080i (really cool!!)

Grand theft auto 3, vice city, and san andreas
    toejam and earl 3
    the suffering ties that bind
    conker reloaded
    advent rising
    max panye 2
    doom 3
    Halo 2

Are all games that the wiki link claims will play in widescreen. But they refuse to display in widescreen on my TV. I have tried going into my TV settings and clicking the Full, or Wide Zoom options under the screen mode but all they do is stretch out the image and make it look fat. I have tried searching in the in-games option menus, and non of these games have any sort of widescreen option to activate. They look better in 4:3 than just stretching them out to fit the screen!

Does anyone have an idea whats going on? 5 of my games look glorious and will display with no issues in widescreen yet nothing else will???

is the wiki link lying? do my second list of titles indeed NOT display in widescreen??? I could have sworn that Halo 2 supported widescreen!

thanks so much guys, I really hope to hear from any of you if you get a spare second to post in the next few days

    Nas drive

The Xbox One doesn't have a build-in System Video Player for browsing the content on a Nas drive. However, you can use the PlayTo functionality on a Windows 8 computer to play the music and video file from NAS to Xbox One. I followed the how
to stream music from NAS to Xbox One
tips and it worked fine. Hope it also useful for you

    Well, NO comments from anyone.

Yet I get a survey to ask how wonderful the service is here....... just hope someone actually reads IT.

Oh, and I tried a DVD, it plays in 4:3 as well, only thing that plays correctly is BD's and MKV's !

The "media player" is a joke.

  5. Got my box today. My MKVs are playing 4:3, are yours of DVDs? Did you encode them with a certain setting to make them come out 16:9?

My humble apologies, I was wound up a tad when I made my previous post and made a boo-boo.

I meant to say "MP4's" NOT "MKV", sorry.

    They are encoded as;

    Video

    ID : 1

    Format : AVC

    Format/Info : Advanced Video Codec

    Format profile : High@L3.1

    Format settings, CABAC : Yes

Format settings, ReFrames : 1 frame

    Format settings, GOP : M=1, N=60

    Codec ID : avc1

Codec ID/Info : Advanced Video Coding

    Duration : 1h 11mn

    Bit rate : 1 433 Kbps

    Maximum bit rate : 5 616 Kbps

    Width : 1 280 pixels

    Height : 720 pixels

    Display aspect ratio : 16:9

    Frame rate mode : Constant

    Frame rate : 25.000 fps

    Color space : YUV

    Chroma subsampling : 4:2:0

    Bit depth : 8 bits

    Scan type : Progressive

    Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.062

    Stream size : 732 MiB (88%)

Unfortunately I only have half a dozen in that format, the other 1600+ movies and TV shows are all .AVI's with a handful of MKV's (which also play in 4:3).

I just wish someone from Microsquish would have the decency to put in a appearance and some sort of comment about this MAJOR stuff-up on their behalf.

I bought the XB1 to be the all singing/all dancing media centre it was promoted as and NOT just a games machine which is all it is good for at the present time.

I'm personally of the opinion that it was moved here to be harder to find...... although it "may" be the correct place for it the simple fact is it is a Micro$oft "app" to play video (which it does a crap job of) and was more accurately placed where I put
it in the first place. Struth, it won't even play DVD's properly.

I am beyond amazed that with very few exceptions NOTHING plays correctly on XB1 yet plays perfectly on every other device in my home............. So much for the "only media device you will ever need"!

I'd even be happy with a "we stuffed up and will try to sort it"............ but the silence is deafening.
