video but no sound through xbox app

I've got no luck with the troubleshooter. The thing thinks everything works fine but it doesn't.

What's absolutely astonishing is that I can hear everything else through the intended surround sound but not the game launched through the Xbox app.

For instance, I can hear a youtube video in the background with the intended sound while the game is stuck in a weird generic stereo that is unpleasant.

I don't understand how this can even happen? It doesn't happen anywhere else simply because there's no reason that the game goes through "another" sound channels or whatever. It feels like games played through the xbox app are "wrapped" around some software
magic that renders the sound themselves (like 3rd party) instead of going through the usual drivers of the computer and it makes absolutely no sense. Infuriating really.

My DVD and Bluray playback is extremely low, have to have my soundbar up 3 times higher than when watching any other video app on xbox one. What is going on??

I have my sound set to stereo uncompressed which didn't seem to do anything. Sound is going out through HDMI to the tv then through optical to the soundbar.

I downloaded the video using the video app in Windows 8, not through my Xbox.

If you have the AV plug in the xbox the HDMI won't work at the same time
