i’ve been trying to change my username to something but it’s not letting me- the name isn’t being used by anyone and isn’t inappropriate but it isn’t letting me change it.

I would like to clarify, are you getting a prompt "Gamertag is unavailable"? Because if yes, according to Xbox Support:

"If you receive a message that says a gamertag is unavailable, this means that you'll need to try another. The gamertag that you're trying to create is either inappropriate for the Xbox service or can't be used at this time."

Awhile back a bunch of dormant gamertags were made available to choose, but a majority of them have been taken.

Note that Zune uses the same account system as XBL. If you find a tag you like and it is taken, it's possible it is being used by a Zune account.

Yup because of lame stuff like Zune lots of people can't get the names they want. No reason to cross the name pools but let's do it anyways, awesome idea MS.

Gamertags are used on other services so just because it isn't being used on xbox live does not mean it isn't in use.

If it says it's unavailable then it's unavailable.

If a gamertag does not log in for 5 years then it is freed up.

Being on xbox live for a certain amount of years does not mean you are entitled to a certain gamertag you want.
