User Retaliation with Immediate Effects

I have a quick question, because I still haven't found an answer or anyone else this has happened to. Without going into too much detail about the specifics- I was playing a multiplayer sports game, and one of the users (don't remember if the user was same-team or opposition) started getting really aggressive with one of the other players. I, probably unnecessarily, tried to defend the player by being aggressive back. Well, the match ends and our aggression continues in the chat. Insults were exchanged, and despite their being the one that started the aggression, after one of my responses, the user comes back with something like "Here ya go, enjoy that"- after which I was notified that I'd broken some kind of Xbox policy and banned from any communications (throughout XBox live, not just the game in which the confrontation began) for 72 hours...

Now, when I report players in a game, I hadn't at that point gotten so much as a notification that it's being looked at (which has changed recently), but here's a user that does something with basically the flick of a wrist and I am barred from communications for three days-- without any kind of time that would be necessary to review the details of the incident (again, I was just trying to defend another player from a bully) on the entire platform, which suggests that the user themselves were able to implement the 72 hour ban without authorization... because they were the authorization.

What happened here?

Did an Xbox employee from engineering or development get angry and retaliate against a common user, or did another user implement a hack or code to affect my communications? Are both possible? If the former, how often does/can this happen (I see similar retaliation from moderators on platforms like Reddit), and are players just at the whim of developers-by-day that become bullies-by-night?
