Update gamertag to lower-case and add a space

I am attempting to update my gamertag as follows:

GR1MDR4G0N --> gr1m dr4g0n

The website and my XBox One are telling me that the gamertag is already in use. I searched and no one has this gamertag. I assume that Microsoft is matching the new gamertag case-insensitively and removing the space and seeing that it is equivalent to my
current one. I do not see why I cannot simply update the letters to lower case and add a space. I created my gamertag on the original XBox and I think there was a restriction that gamertags were all upper case back then. Now I would like to make my gamertag
look nicer. How can I get this accomplished given that the website and XBox will not allow me?

The reason you can't send a friends request to that gamertag is because
YOU are that gamertag. The system does not recognize spacing in gamertags, so "Dhub<space>Step" is exactly the same gamertag as "DhubStep" (with no space),
or "Zen<space>Like<space>Calm" is the same gamertag as "ZenLikeCalm" (with no space).



The same goes for capital and lower-case letters. "S" is viewed the same as "s".

 

Gamertag Problem

if the system shows that a gamertag is not available, then it's safe to say it is not available.

Be aware that spaces and upper/lower case characters do not make a name unique.

For example. ABC123, is considered the same as 'abc 123', 'A b C 123' etc

 

it most likely belongs to another account if you're getting that message. The account it belongs to may not be using xbox anymore but that just means the gamer tag is tied to an account and can't use it. There's no restriction on case sensitivity. The space
is a valid character and is considered part of the gamer tag

 

It is in use by you. The gamertag system does not account for capitalizations or spaces. For example the gamertag "Gamertag" and the gamertag "Gamer Tag" would be considered the same thing. This is why it says "gr1m dr4g0n" is already being used because
its being used by you as "GR1MDR4G0N".

In order to change the spaces/capitalizations you woulf first have to pay to change to gamertag from "GR1MDR4G0N" to something else other than "gr1m dr4g0n". Then you would have to pay again to change that gamertag to "gr1m dr4g0n"

I know that is not the answer you were likely looking for but that is the only way to change spaces/capitalizations on a gamertag
