Understanding and possibly using the HDMI pass through feature

I am confused about using the HDMI pass through feature. Currently I have a Optik TV from Telus. The set top box( STB) connects to the TV HDMI port #1 My Xbox 1 connects to port #2. To use either requires using the remote of the TV (Samsung) to select the
correct source.. and is a pain.

I "thought" that by placing the output of my STB into the Xbox HDMI in port I would not have to switch sources.. and be using port #2 ( the output of the Xbox)... BUT.. this is not working. Does the "Pass Through" need to be energized or otherwise set
up to use? Does the Xbox need to be energized (turned on) to use? If the later it would appear that I will be watching TV as an app of the Xbox.... which initially.. seems more complicated than using my TV remote and changing sources.

Thank you for your time and any thoughts on this

And, all the best wishes for the New Year

    :)

I have never tried it but the Xbox would have to be on as I think it takes over as your set top box by using the "one guide"... plug it up and go to "setup live tv" and try it. ..

Well. I "sort of" tried that and nothing I tried seemed to work.. and would not be able to repeat all the things I tried either.. I am under the impression that the "live TV" thing only works in the US.. which I am assuming is why the Xbox can not see the
STB. In the One Guide setup process there is a place to find your TV.. the instructions on the web imply I can choose the brand.. That option is not available and the only input I have is for a number for my TV (remote?? they do not specify).. Anyway a number
    which I do not have..

    Hi Ralph,

There are two HDMI ports on the back. The one nearest the power supply needs to be connected to the TV. The other one goes to your STB. This sounds like the setup you have already created.

To answer some of your questions:

To watch content from the STB, yes you need the Xbox One on. You will need to use the "TV" app, which will display whatever input the STB is providing through the HDMI cable.

You can now watch content from the STB without any further setup, but you will need to use the STB remote to control the channels and so on. This is by far the simplest setup but does not allow the Xbox One to control the STB, nor will you have OneGuide.

To not have to use the STB remote, and to use the Xbox One controller, you will need to set up Live TV, as in the link that Bimnog provided. If you follow those steps, you should be able to set it up.

  9. Hi Grampa Ralph2

Yes - The Xbox One is required to be on (not off or in standby) to utilize the HDMI pass through

    FYI:

This is best when you have an xbox one with the Kinect. If you do not have a Kinect, it may seem more cumbersome.

If you have a Kinect, (or a IR cable that runs from the xbox one, into your SAT box) the use of the SAT box via the xbox one can offer simplicity.

Turning on the xbox one, if you choose can turn on your TV and SAT box, as well as while using a xbox controller, smartglass, or the media remote, operate the SAT box with the *OneGuide which is the xbox version of your cable companies channel guide.

*OneGuide is the app that allows you to watch TV, scroll channels, set favorite channels, jump from the xbox social or oneguide tabs to seemlessly watch TV via snap or full screen.

I have an xbox one with the kinect for the main room and my kids and wife often loose the remotes so now, this has been a life saver as it operates the TV, SAT, xbox and sound bar simultaneously.

The other xbox is upstairs in my office and it does not have a kinect however while on, i can still watch TV but the it requires me to use the other remotes.
