Unclaimed gamertags still having numbers

Hi.

I play the game Sea Of Thieves a lot, so I wanted to change my name to something related to that, so I decided to go for the name Azure Scout because I saw it was not taken by anyone. When I went to go change it, it still had Hashtags and Numbers,
even though nobody has it. Can anyone tell me why this is?

If it's given a suffix, then it means it's in use somewhere on Microsoft's servers. The system doesn't see things like spaces as making gamertags unique either. So while looking it up as Azure Scout doesn't show anything, the tag is actually taken as AzureScout.

Only some old gamertags from the original Xbox has been released, Microsoft let at least 10 years to release them… That's could be the reason why you are not able to pickup your wanted gamertag...

Some people have old accounts they sign in to every few years. This keeps the tag from becoming available again. I think its like 7-10 years before a gamertag will be available after it's been dormant.

Maybe it has already been taken recently and the service you are checking with has not yet updated.
