Unable to update minecraft bedrock client 1.20.41 to 1.20.5 to be able to play on realms.

Uninstalling and re-installing Minecraft did not help since I was essentially re-installing the "latest" version for PC that wasn't the latest version needed to play on the realms. The proper Minecraft update was made available for PC one day after realms was updated.

This was the original issue, in essence, the update for PC was not available on the Microsoft store until a day after the update was pushed to realms.

The issue was the Minecraft client on the Microsoft store being updated 24 hours after the update to realms was pushed, so for 24 hours there was a mis-match in the game versions.

Meaning for 24 hours it wasn't possible to play the game since the versions didn't match.

The issue is fixed now that the update has been pushed to PC however I hope that in the future the update gets pushed at the same time on PC and on the realm.

Just in case, you found something similar like this in the future (update is a bit delay, issues with the in-game feature, Minecraft Realms concerns). We recommend you reach out to the game support right away. They will be able to provide you with the details when the release of update be available. So, you may keep your Windows updated and no longer need to re-install the Windows.

From the game dev's website:

Realms error: Client Outdated. When attempting to play on
Minecraft Realms, if you see an error that states that your
client is outdated, it means that you're using an older game version. To solve this, you will need to update your game to the latest release version of
Minecraft.

You need to make sure that they are on the same update version of Bedrock edition. Currently it is version 1.12.01. Anything higher will be the beta version which is not able to be played on realms.

If they are on the same version then the friend will have to invite them to the realm or give them the realm invite code.

You will also need an active gold subscription to be able to play on realms.
